Drafted near completion in Brown County draft list

Brown County Exemption Board reports near completion of the first draft. An additional ten percent above the required 156 men were drawn to cover possible rejections. Accepted names are listed, with mobilization to the Armory in New Ulm for final orders. The board, with Sheriff W. Julius and officials, notes strenuous two month effort and collaboration with doctors for examinations. Continued on page 2 column 1.

Suspended City Officials Create Uncertain New Ulm Governance

Governor suspends Mayor L A Fritsche, County Auditor L G Vogel, and City Attorney Albert Piuender at the Safety Commission's urging. William Packer named Vogel's successor and Eibner appointed temporary mayor, but no formal notices were sent. Public offices remain in doubt as investigations proceed. Paul Adams arrested at La Sueur for contempt of court over unpaid support.

Hughes Train 10 to Run Again on St. Peter Line

Efforts by Senator Henry Benton and George T. Olcen paid off as the Minnesota railroad and warehouse commission orders resuming the Hughes train on the New Ulm St. Peter short line effective September. The restored schedule gives St. Peter and nearby residents improved business travel with arrivals from Mankato at 6:30 a.m. and connections to Tracy by 10:20 a.m. The article also notes power line work approved to string wires from Winthrop to Lafayette and onward to Sleepy Eye and St James, improving regional communications.

Turner Park Hosts Historic Boiler from Otter of New Ulm

A gala event by the Junior Pioneer Society in New Ulm marked the arrival of the old boiler from the steamer Otter of New Ulm. Capt. Hindermann, its former captain, spoke to a crowd of about 3,000 as Hofmeister's band played.

Northwest coal shortage urged by Lundeen letter

Earnest Lundeen of Minneapolis congressman from the Fifth District writes to President Wilson urging immediate action to address coal shortages in Minnesota and the Northwest. He cites 4,198,109 tons short of soft coal at Duluth and 16,514 tons hard coal short, calling for preemptive measures to prevent furnace shutdowns.

Youth 18 Killed in Auto Accident on South Minnesota

Frank Amann 18, son of Mr and Mrs Andreas Amann of North Washington street, died minutes after a car he drove rolled on South Minnesota street near the brick yards en route to Cottonwood river. His brother Harry escaped injury. Frank, born June 23 1899, was a popular grocer helper at W H Bierbaum integrating a large circle of friends. Funeral was at the Catholic church with burial in the Catholic cemetery.

Bankers Picnic Brings Brown County Members Together

Bankers from Brown County and their families enjoyed a postponed Sunday picnic at Hunters Reed in the city. Originally set for Fort Hill at Lake Hanska, rain caused the delay. The afternoon passed quietly with bankers pleased to relax from work. Outside the county, Andrew Olin of Franklin joined with his family for the day.

County Fair Alive With Fine Weather And Busy Exhibits

Brown County Fair Grounds opens under sunlit skies with crowds arriving by foot horse car and train. Exhibits shine though some departments show fewer entries as schools and Red Cross join a bustling show of fruits vegetables flowers and fall wares from New Ulm Sleepy Eye and Dill Greenhouses. Rust and retail displays mix with canned goods art shells and staged demonstrations while Red Cross members greet visitors and veterans support the cause.
