Tornado Toll Shocks Tyler And Spur Aid From New Ulm

A tornado struck the Tyler area nine decades ago, killing nearly twenty and devastating homes and businesses. The New Ulm community organized swift aid, with August Stork recounting the event and Mrs. Wim. P. Stork sharing her eyewitness account of the night, as residents hurried to shelter and the lights failed.

Forty register in Brown County for selective draft

Forty men aged twenty one to thirty one registered at the Brown County courthouse on Saturday, including fourteen from New Ulm. The new total mirrors the June registration with about ten percent of Brown County’s prior registrants. Names of registrants follow.

Fourteen Departed for Camp Grant Last Monday

Fourteen men left on the Northwestern line for Camp Grant near Rockford Illinois for induction into the United States Army. They were escorted to the depot by the Union Concert Band and city citizens. The parade was led by Carl Engelbert carrying the U S flag. Sheriff Julius and Dr Geo B Weiser led the draft officials with officials, band, and Red Cross girls bringing up the rear. Sugar for Minnesota canning set by food administration

Minnesota housewives may receive up to five more pounds of sugar for September canning under Food Administration rules. Those with prior excess get no sugar. those at 10 pounds per person on August 31 can take 4 more pounds per household member. those with no sugar yet may take 15 pounds per person. The aim is to ensure 15 pounds per person for canning by month end, to stock sufficient fruit and reduce waste. Candy makers kept to 50 percent of supply, bakers 70 percent, and households urged to forego candy to save sugar for canning.

Labor Party Forms as Evans Endorsed for Governor

At the Minnesota State Labor Convention in St Paul David Evans of Tracy, a Democrat, was endorsed as an independent candidate for governor with a pledge to veto any prohibition statutes if elected. The delegates urged forming a new party named the Working People's Political League uniting Non-partisan league and labor unions. A clash over seeding delegates and Evans being a prohibitionist sparked debate before the committee of fourteen approved his nomination.

New rules force major papers to cut newsprint use

Wet Industries Board orders a 15 percent drop in ordinary newsprint consumption. Twin Cities dailies must shrink per-issue sizes, with Sundays facing heavier cuts. Funnies like the Katzies and Father and others may be eliminated or reduced to save paper for the war effort. Country weeklies struggle, as eight pages is near the limit without shrinking to four pages.
