New Ulm Celebrates 1862 Indian Massacre Anniversary

New Ulm marked the 60th anniversary of the 1862 Indian massacre with a homecoming hailed as the greatest local celebration. Crowds reached about twenty thousand for parades and displays, including Turners performances, Zuhrah Shriners’ parade, and elaborate business floats portraying pioneer life and 1862 events. Major Louis G. Vogel led efforts to mobilize merchants for parade floats, while divisions showcased floats, bands, and historic scenes from Brown County’s early days.

Drowning Near Mankato Claims Lorentz Life

Joseph R. Lorentz aged 27 drowned in the Minnesota River near his home five miles below Mankato on the St Peter road bluff Belgrade township Nicollet County after entering deep water without swimming. Body found next day about five rods downstream. Survived by wife and three children, parents, siblings, and is buried at St Peter and St Paul church in Mankato amid family and local attendees. He belonged to Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus.

Big Cattle Show At Brown County Fair In New Ulm

Brown County fair in New Ulm August 28 to 30 promises a bigger event with livestock stalls nearly filled by breeders and a large permanent hog barn addition doubling capacity. Amusements include tug of war between Brown and Nicollet teams, Seven Flying Whirlwinds, St Paul Dispatch flying circus, and Capital Amusement Company shows. Local baseball games, Brown County bands, and expanded fireworks cap the program with free acts and night performances.

Mayor Praises Pioneer Pioneers in Historic Address

Mayor L A Fritsche opened the 60th anniversary celebration at Gerrosa Park with a welcoming speech lauded by listeners. He paid tribute to hardy pioneers who settled in the early 1850s, recalled their struggle to conquer land and forests, and linked local history to the nation’s broader past. The speech concludes with a note that it continues on Page B.

Mrs Gault Leads Historic New Ulm Anniversary Program

The 60th anniversary celebration at New Ulm opened with a Turner Park concert by Hofmeister's band and continued at German Park with speeches by Dr J P Graff Mayor Gave Splendid Welcome and Mrs Lillien Cox Gault detailing Minnesota history and the 1862 Indian Massacre. Thos Hughes of Mankato and Capt Albert Steimhouser spoke as community singing led by A J Alwin concluded the events.

Pioneers honoured at Milford 1862 massacre anniversary

Spelbrink tells Milford story of the 1862 Indian massacre as Hofmeister’s band opens a tribute event in Henle grove Milford township. Affected pioneers remembered for delaying attacks that spared New Ulm, with Major Pfaender presiding and the crowd reading names of victims.

Octogenarian at New Ulm Massacre Celebration

Henry Pierce, 81, recalls serving with the Renville Rangers during the 1862 Sioux outbreak and Fort Ridgely defense. The Lynd, Minnesota resident spoke of marching from Yellow Medicine to Fort Snelling, then to Ridgely with two bullets and caps, earning a pension. He witnessed the Mankato hangings and later drove stage routes. Pierce values a Fort Ridgely Medal inscribed Defender of Ft Ridgely Aug 18-27 1862.
