Camp conditions improve for Minnesota troops at Llano Grande

The Minnesota troops near Llano Grande Texas have completed three weeks of hard drilling at Camp Bobleter and training that boosted discipline and cheer. City tennis tournament opens next Thursday with prizes

The city tennis tournament starts Thursday August 24. Entry closes Monday with a 25 cent fee for boys to cover balls. Open to all players including ladies and men. Prizes include a lacquet from the Review. schedules and times will be announced in next week’s Review.

Harness Dealers Convention Hits New Ulm

New Ulm hosted its first Retail Saddlery dealers convention at the Commercial Club Rooms with nearly forty Second District members. F J Backer presided as president, Alois Bertrand of Sleepy Eye was elected Secretary and Treasurer, and a fall meeting is planned for Winnebago. Speakers urged diversifying products into auto accessories to offset declining harness demand as motor vehicles rise.

Train Kills Stranger Near Sleepy Eye On Final Run

A Chicago and Northwestern engine driven by Ralph Yates struck and killed a man walking on the main line near Sleepy Eye. The deceased, a 55 to 60 year old stranger, showed no identity and had been drinking. Coroner and sheriff deemed it accidental. the engineer retires at 70 the next day. Police search continues for the man’s relatives, including a possible link to Selma Johnson of Chicago.

Resignation of H Klatt not accepted. raise approved

At a Lutheran Synod meeting, H Klatt’s resignation as teacher at Spen Lutheran school was refused and he received a salary raise. The church will install new furnaces before winter. Engelbert reported on the Minnesota Synod meeting held recently in St Paul.

Burglary Ring Strikes Three Local Businesses

Lafayette was visited by petty burglars who broke into Farmers Creamery, The Great Western Elevator, and a store last week. The trespassers used clumsy methods, suggesting they were new at the job and possibly tramps. No significant items were taken.

Copper Thieves Loot City Light Plant Wire

Copper thieves escaped with nearly 500 pounds of wire from the city electric light plant last Wednesday night. Most recovered but insulation burned off, lowering utility value. Two suspects, Chas Gill and Frank Kirkham, were arrested, released, and later reheld as officers pursued further leads. A second haul near oil tanks brought total near 400 pounds recovered. Kirkham later left for Chicago. Gill held briefly longer. Also recounted is Otto R. Kohn’s car accident near Tagle Mill bridge with minor injuries.

Dakota farmers mourn as I W W fears grow

Louis Buenger Sr reports I W W crowds in Ortonville and Aberdeen with thousands marching and box cars filling as farmers face crop losses. Wheat yields are six to eight bushels per acre, oats are light, and some farmers plow under or refuse to cut grain while weather may still save a corn crop. Police in New Ulm push crowds through and send newcomers to the next train.

Faculty Choice Accepts Call at Martin Luther College

The corps of teachers at Dr. Martin Luther College is complete as Prof. R. M. Albrecht accepts the call to fill the vacancy from Prof. Sperling and will become a New Ulm citizen. Prof. Wagner’s July election awaited Albrecht's congregation decision before final acceptance.

Circus Returns After Delay at County Fair Grounds

Car and Motorcycle Clash on Center and Minnesota

Sunday afternoon a collision occurred at Center and Minnesota as Anton Beyer riding a motorcycle disputed right of way with Major Albert Pfaender in a Chandler Six driven by Adolph Amann carrying Mrs Plaender and friends. Beyer was on the wrong side of the road and paid the price with damage to the motorcycle and minor paint loss to the car.

New Band Organized From Second Regiment Musicians

A new band formed from members of the old Second Regiment band, who remained when others went to the front, now lists twenty six enrolled players. A. P. Boock is named leader with John Henle as assistant. The first practice occurred Monday evening in the armory, and a band name is expected to be chosen soon.

Burglars Startle New Ulm Citizens With Window Entries

A night of fear struck New Ulm residents as a lone burglar, dubbed a window thief, attempted three homes on First North German and Valley streets. He entered via open windows, escaping after brief confrontations with the Fritz, Young, and Reardon families. At Fritz’s place around 11:15 p.m. the intruder fled after guards spotted his entry. Young lost $2.02 and narrowly escaped as Mrs Young screamed. a rope was used to test entry near a window. Reardon family awoke to a man at the gate, prompting further alarm and a continued police search. The burglar remains at large.
