Military Picnic a Big Hit for New Ulm Fund Drive

The Hermann Heights event by Burg’s Battery raised over 1000 for the front line boys in Mercedes Texas. Net receipts surpassed 678.50 with further donations from local firms and citizens including 300 to Captain Groebner 200 to Captain Hubbard and 150 to Major Pfaender for the Second Regiment band. The event featured music by the New Ulm Concert Band a dance prize shooting raffles and a large crowd of about 2000.

The Carnival Company skipping New Ulm this week notes the field was preempted by an earlier act. Locals express indifference as the visiting show is described as no better or worse than prior companies. The Wallace and Hagenbeck shows also plan to pass up New Ulm.

Negro Star In Saloon Brawl Sentenced In Sleepy Eye

In Sleepy Eye a black man Fred L. Kinner stabbed white man Sam Rice after taunts, slashing a finger and injuring arms and shoulder. Rice aided by Sheriff Julius, Kinner surrendered to avoid lynching, pleaded guilty, and received a six month sentence on good behavior to Stillwater. he hails from Wisconsin with a wife and two children.

Heat Prostrations Claim Two Local Lives in New Ulm

Two men died from heat and humidity in New Ulm and nearby areas during a severe heat spell. Andrew Zapfer and Julius Lorenz perished, with others including an 18 year old Courtland youth and Mrs. Joseph Hoffmann affected by the high temperatures. Chicago reported 100 heat deaths in a day among 185 total fatalities.

Weather and epidemic tolls devastate city in days

In a city, fifty babies died within a 24 hour period due to unusual weather. By Sunday night reports indicated five hundred horses had perished in a few days and two hundred lay corpses or injured on the streets awaiting care or removal.

Severe crop damage from heat and rust across region

Last week the Review reported hot humid weather decimating crops around New Ulm with only about 50 percent yields from local fields. Elevators report Northwestern line crops in South Dakota hit about 85 percent. A L Beecher and J F Armstrong toured Redwood Falls Fairfax Morton and found damage in line with New Ulm conditions.

Concert Program Next Sunday by New Ulm Concert Band

A large turnout greeted the New Ulm Concert Band at Turner Hall Park last Sunday evening with attendance lasting until 10 30 pm The favorable weather and post picnic energy kept crowds strolling and listening The program for next Wednesday includes marches overtures and selections from Mighty Lak a Rose Jollification The Banner Band and Illinois Central among others while the band continues twice weekly practices to fill the void left by the Second Regiment Band

Carriers Report On Mail Service In Milford Town

Rural carriers show Milford residents receive the most mail with about 700 more first class pieces and nearly 2,000 more second class items than others on routes from New Ulm. Route 3 reports 1324 lbs 6 oz delivered and 83 lbs 8 oz outgoing, while Route 4 serves Milford and Valley Front streets extending nine blocks. Route 1 serves Nicollet County across the river, and Route 7 comes fourth as others cluster near. A table lists first class, second class, fourth class mail and total weight by carrier.

Camp Lisno Grande Texas July 28 1916 reports Minnesota Indiana Nebraska and North Dakota guardsmen totaling about 20000 in the Brownsville division under General Bliss with cavalry at Mercedes. Routine details show early reveille assembly drill recall and guard mount while afternoons are free for letters baseball boxing and wrestling. Sanitation and discipline are strict with daily police duty and limited access after taps.
