At an adjourned city council meeting F Nagel Co accepted a plan to install a sample cement street crossing at German and First North streets at no cost to the city A wall permit was granted to Hillenstein Brewing Co for sidewalk work opposite the brewery as part of major improvements Building permits were issued to several residents and street improvements were approved with plans referred to the street committee An ordinance update banning wooden sidewalks was passed unanimously Bills totaling 20595 were approved and council set to meet again on April 23

Sunday night a fifth attempt to burn the C N W stock yards failed. the blaze was confined to the scale house with about 100 dollar loss, while the broader property valued in thousands was spared. Officials condemn the incendiary act and pledge swift action. The yards will be rebuilt and restored for stock reception.
For the week ending April 15, 1901, light rains on the 11th and 12th prevented soil drying, with frosts in the mornings. Red River valley reports early land disturbance in light soils. heavy soils and low areas remain wet. Northwest regions show good seeding progress. potatoes planted in Douglas and Brown counties. Clover and grains wintered well. grass needs warmer weather to grow. A booklet on Oregon, Washington and Idaho plus a Columbia River map is offered for six cents by W. B. Kniskern, Chicago.
The Chicago Record-Herald reports a vaccination study during the regent smallpox epidemic from Nov 30, 1900, to Apr 10, 1901. Of 171 cases, 140 were never vaccinated. 31 had evidence of incomplete or distant infancy vaccination. Only two cases showed typical successful vaccination, the most recent thirty years ago.
Obituaries note the deaths of a Kling ler child and Mrs. Margaret Nelson of Brighton aged 85 with burial in the Norwegian cemetery. Undertaker Buenger handled the Brighton burial. Concert plans include the Second Regiment Band at the opera house with brass, strings, comedy, and vocal selections. An art exhibit by Pay Art Co. will open at the high school featuring statuary and pictures for school funds. The Retail Liquor Dealers Association held a St George outing with speeches and demonstrations. Critics skew legislature expense for reporters while lawmakers grant themselves higher salaries.
