Sunbury residents drift through harvest season with work and travel. teachers resume duties at Girls High in Reading and Midway School. many visit kin or depart to study at Mt St Marys College and Bucknell University. Engagements span Arendtsville to York Springs with nursing student Sabina Landis sailing for France.
In Ridgefield New Jersey Mrs John QO Appler reports a daughter. Littlestown ties recur through Mrs Appler’s mother Mrs Caroline Mehring and other relatives. Other births include Dr L M Basehoar’s daughter in Moundaville W Va, and multiple Littlestown families welcoming daughters or a stillborn child.
Local patients were treated at York and Philadelphia hospitals. Charles McCall of Littlestown returned home from Mont Alto Sanatorium. Miss Mary Cromer, Littlestown, operated on at West Side Sanatorium York. Mrs Rinedollar of Hanover sent to York Hospital with typhoid. has six children. W C Angel of Hanover to York Hospital after a marble fall. Robert Smith of Littlestown operated at Hahnemann Hospital Philadelphia. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson of Hanover. James Davis of Hanover discharged from York hospital surgical ward. Navy reports fleet engagement with German U boats off France on September 6. two vessels sunk and all submarines lost.
The local exemption board resumed work to fill Adams County 240 quota with 848 men appearing through Friday. About 140 were denied or sought exemption. roughly 400 names were sent to the district board for occupation-based claims, with potential second-draft implications. Sheriff Hartman said the boys are eager to serve and 108 men from the county must report to Camp Meade by September 19, leaving five days for orderly sendoffs.
Volunteers from East Berlin Littleatown and Gettysburg area enlist or apply for service. Charles R. Thompson plans Columbus examination soon. Snyder joins 60th Infantry in Gettysburg area. Sterling W. Yingling enters U S Army in Harrisburg. Merle Ernst, Gettysburg High School graduate, enlists in the Quartermaster Corps.
Harry Reese of McSherrystown employed at the Hanover cordage works injured his left hand and thumb while brushing his coat, dislodging a hatchet from a pocket. Banns of matrimony published for the second time on Sunday morning for Violet Smith, daughter of Adam Smith, and Alovaine Sebuchart of Conewago Township.
A Washington issued order requires mail boxes to be on the right side of the road, angering Adams County patrons who must relocate boxes, cross roads in bad weather, or secure land permits. Carriers gain little while millions face inconvenience. rural residents protest strongly.
Three young women occupants of a car driven by Miss Mabel Roth of Abbottstown were injured in a collision with a military motorcycle near Wilt farm, about 3 pm Saturday. The Roth car sustained radiator and tire damage, the motorcycle and sidecar were badly damaged, and the rider suffered cuts and bruises.
Lyceum course managers in New Oxford announced fall and winter 1917 1918 entertainments. The Dietries perform October 3 and Strollers Male Quartette November 16 with Mason Jubilee Singers February 5 Dr Robert Parker Miles February 19 Clarence L Burgderter March 7. They contracted with Antrim Bureau of Philadelphia to secure top acts and ticket sales began Saturday drawing strong response.
Frank L. Weaver of East High Street exhibited his self built bomb to government officials in Washington last week. The device drew praise but officials said it could not be used at this early war stage. Weaver remains hopeful. Secret Service agents reportedly nabbed a man named Jerry in government buildings seeking to learn the purpose of his suspicious device, but he was released as harmless each time.
A runaway horse near Carlisle and Berlin streets caused a bogey to crash into a tree, injuring four-year-old Wm Yealy but with bruises. A battlefield road collision injured L B Oheleger and O W Benstedt, cars damaged. Florence DeHaven resigns Civic Nurse post in Hanover after years of service. Wehler selected as science instructor at Collingawood High School. Butcher W J Miller cuts knee deeply in shop accident. Hunters Town matinee features a free-for-all with Seaka Eddie C Oyler and Spangler rubrician for season honors.
At the adjourned Sept 7 session President Livingston led the council in hiring changes. Wm. KE. Hensil’s resignations as pumper and policeman were accepted and salaries set for new and consolidated roles. Emory F. Melhorn to be pumper at 40 a month starting Sept 10 1917. J. S. Sanders to accept police officer at 15 a month. Randers named police driver at 15 a month. Adjourned.
The Burgess told the council that due to ongoing objections he asked a police officer to return his badge and gear. Officer Hensel, also a water plant pump operator, warned he would quit pumping if his salary was cut and extra pay refused. The council declined higher pay, and Hensel agreed to work temporarily until a new man is found.
Mrs. George Otto formerly Mrs. Chas Wagner of Carlisle street suffered a fractured nose during a pleasure drive with her husband Mr. Otto and his son. The carriage struck a gutter and the front seat, injuring both passengers with cuts to the head and facial injuries.
A coal dealer, W. Kohler, narrowly escaped death when a large gon dolly on Hanover street began to roll downward while Kohler stood under the car cleaning hoppers. He barely wriggled free as the car slid past and struck his thigh, leaving him shaken for the rest of the day after the car left the track at the cut-off.
A paper enclosed with 3 in cash in an Hanover postmark arrives for Mrs H Slaybaugh of Cedar Ride. Eight hundred non-commissioned officers leave Gettysburg for eastern Army camps to train recruits, likely prompting privates' advancement. A stolen hide case leads to John Reifsnyder’s imprisonment in Frederick on $1000 bail. General Thomas J Stewart dies at Harrisburg on his birthday. Reverend Armstrong to preach in New Oxford. Dickewarus Tribe No 189 IO R M gathers Thursday at the Wigwan. Fire alarms suggest Bell phone 77-11.
John A. Lavas, 25, of New York, supply sergeant and Co H, 59th Infantry, died after a rifle discharged during a recruits demonstration at Gettysburg camp. The bullet struck him in the head while asleep in his tent. His wife and infant child mourn him. body to be sent to New York. Four others were wounded by a machine gun in the same unit last week. one soldier faced amputation. The accident arose when an officer operating the gun believed it was unloaded. The bullet passed through a tent, injuring several men and a reader's book.
Inclement weather forces postponement of the Matinee Races at Griest's Park York Springs to September 15. Unfinished races from August 11 will be completed plus four new trotting and running classes with 25 horses entered. A band and colored minstrels perform. a 1 pm baseball game between old York Springs and Churchtown clubs precedes racing at 3 pm. Refreshments, merry go round, and other amusements fill the grounds. Admission 15 cents to all over six. Autns parked free. Committee.
A soldier named Ford, unable to hire a car for lack of cash, abducted a brand new five passenger Overland from Oyler Brothers in Gettysburg. He took his companion Miss Smith on a pleasure trip toward Lancaster, lost control seven miles east of Abbottstown, causing minor damage. No injuries. wheel and axle were taken to York for repairs. Ford was later apprehended and the car recovered.
Parts of a Confederate soldier's skull and hair were recovered Monday afternoon at the 61st Infantry camp east of the Emmittsban Road. Among the remains lay 83 Confederate bullets, a cartridge box, minie balls, blanket parts, a gum coat piece, and two teeth, one with a gold filling. Workmen and soldiers divided the trophies, and the skull will be buried.
Wagaman & Company of Dallastown began raising the old bridge at Lingr's Mall on the Lincoln Highway after a delay caused by a shortage of steelwork. The project covers a new concrete bridge over Conewage creek, about 44 miles west of town.
W H Best is poised to take over the New Oxford Shoe factory with stock and needles ordered and former workers notified of an early restart. The manager’s name remains unannounced. In other news, Hanover worker Conrad Warehime suffered crushed fingers in a factory accident. J R Little plans a move from Gettysburg to Westminster soon. St Pauls Ushers League held a luncheon at Bon-Ton. A provisional battalion is expected to depart Gettysburg for France midweek. Sterling Frock is in training at Dr J L Sheetz for home repairs on Center Square. James R Weaver’s Hanover Street residence is being repainted by Miller.
