New Oxford High School senior George Spangler won the state Legion essay contest, earning a $250 cash prize and a four year college scholarship he declined to attend his chosen college. The runner up from Littlestown High School now receives the scholarship offer as the state committee confirms the honor.
Luther R. Swope 66 of East Berlin R. 1 died Tuesday at Hanover General Hospital from coronary occlusion after two days as a patient. He served with the 304th Ammunition Train in World War I, entered service in 1916, spent 12 months in France, and farmed locally. Survived by his wife Sadie and nine children, with funeral Friday at 2 p.m. at Emig Funeral Home East Berlin. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery Hanover.
Emmett R. Woods of Carlisle filed a reply in the prothonotary to a case cited by Philip J. Miller. Woods says an oral agreement entitled him to a commission on two properties, including personal property as part of the deal, while Miller contends Woods sought two commissions for the same transactions and that the Cumberland County properties were paid in trade for the Adams County farm.
East Berlin schools plan an open house Friday night after the annual spring concert by the high school chorus and band. The program features pieces such as Boom Fa Da Ra La and Born To Be Free by the junior chorus, Summer Time and You ger Than Springtime by the senior chorus, and They Call It America by chorus and band, with Marlin Newcomer on trombone. Choral director is Miss Betty J Weisenfluh and band director is D Earl Ward Jr.
The Candy Corner TV show featuring Al Ross and WBAL junior talent will be sponsored by the Conewago Lions Club and held at Delone Catholic High School Auditorium McSherrystown on May 11. A 33 year old expectant mother Mrs Edna Marie Baublitz died after a car driven by her husband rolled over west of York. Doctors performed a Caesarean section and the baby boy, due in July, did not survive. Their son Stephen 7 was treated for a head bump. David Jr 11 escaped injury. The crash occurred about 8 30 p m on a township road near the Lincoln Highway.
The Adams County Court directed that the larceny of a dog charge against Norman Richstine be presented to the August Grand Jury for disposition after both parties refused to pay costs. District Attorney Teeter noted Miller released two fox hounds for training on January 8. one returned and Richstine was alleged to have possession.
A farewell dinner for the Rev and Mrs J H Hege is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. at St Pauls church Red Run. Hege retired December 31 1953 after serving Salem Lutheran charge since 1916. Hege remained supply pastor at Salem until January and at St Pauls until March. Charles C Snyder is now charge pastor.
John Alexander S Brashears 58 of New Oxford died Sunday night at Lebanon Veterans Hospital after three weeks illness. Born in New Oxford he was son of Charles and Mary Jane Brashears and longtime resident. He worked 25 years as a molder in various iron foundries and at his illness was employed by Livingston Shoe Co.
Discharges include Mrs. Oscar Laughman and infant son from New Oxford Route 1, George Books, Mrs. Claude W. Keeney and infant daughter, and several others in Gardners and Gettysburg areas. Admissions include Dr. Edward D. Hudson of Gettysburg and Mrs. George Deatrick of New Oxford Route 1 among others. Abbottstown couple Charles W. Rodgers and wife welcome a daughter born Thursday at Hanover Hospital. Connie's Restaurant promotes Mother to Dinner Sunday with baked ham and roast beef at 1.00 through lunch.

Ramona Wallen daughter of Mr and Mrs Norman FE Wallen will be crowned May Queen at New Oxford High School May Day ceremonies on Thursday May 12 at 2 15 pm on the campus. Wallen is a commercial student active in dramatics choral group art club school paper year book staff cheer reading band and basketball and served as class secretary. Betty Griest will be May Queen attendant and is a Home Economics student, band member, and basketball player.

The New Oxford High School junior and senior choruses perform Friday at 8:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Repertoire includes Rock A My Soul Were You There Open Our Eyes and more. Adams County issued 24 marriage licenses in April, per the clerk of courts. The 1953 total reaches seven for the year after April, while 22 licenses were issued in April 1954, bringing four month totals to 78.

Mrs Barbara Ann Stremmel died Tuesday at her Waynesboro home after seven weeks of illness three in critical condition. Born in Two Taverns to Daniel and Elizabeth Trostle, she is survived by a daughter a brother Charles Trostle four sisters Lillie Shryock Clarence Mackle Cornelius Mann and E E Peiffer two grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Her husband Edward Stremmel died in 1953.
