Hughes Burson ticket shifts to Republican platform
The report outlines a Hughes Roosevelt Progressive strategy. A plan devised by Senator Oliver of Pennsylvania proposes the Republican convention endorse Justice Hughes via a broad progressive platform, accepted by Hughes, enabling Progressives to back the ticket without reservations. George Perkins leads the steering committee guiding talks with Republican leaders.
Delegates urged to stay in Chicago for nomination talks
Progressive leaders said the steering committee would meet Republican leaders or a similar committee from the Republican national committee to discuss possible joint action on a candidate. Senator Penrose announced he would vote for Mr. Knox on the first ballot and expected Pennsylvania to follow. He noted the convention remains free and openly discusses candidates while Knox support from other states was anticipated. Governor Brumbaugh accepted Penrose as chairman of the state delegation.
