Adams county men in First Army MP unit return home
Twenty six Adams county men served in one Military Police escort guard company in the First Army since D-Day. Pvt. Charles A. Smith of McSherrystown visited home on furlough to reassure parents their sons, including 25 others from the county, were safe and well. The unit landed in France the day after D-Day and moved through France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg into Germany, seeing Bastogne and Aachen. They handled prisoners and escorted them to rear areas, facing snipers and artillery. Smith met his company in Bastogne on November 5 and returned from England December 28, 1944, after ten months overseas. County men reportedly supply a high share of Adams countians in the unit.
