East Berlin Firemen Carnival Featured by Bands

East Berlin firemen plan a weekend carnival with the East Prospect Band and Gettysburg High School Band in a Friday 7 30 p m parade. The Moose Band of Hanover headlines Friday and Bermudian Springs High School Band tunes Saturday. Games rides food and drinks abound as volunteers are asked to help and donations benefit the fire company and equipment upkeep.

State Plans Three East Berlin Streets Construction

The Department of Highways proposes three state highway sections in East Berlin and will hold a public hearing if requested. This federal aid project covers Abbottstown and Harrisburg Streets, East King and West King Streets, about three miles total. Plans show lane widths, shoulders, and minor grade improvements from Route 74 to the borough line, with hearings requested by August 8 to the district engineer in Harrisburg.

Damage Action Follows Accident in Bonneauville

Oscar E. and Edythe I. Feeman of Littlestown file a negligence suit in county court against Dennis Wallick of Littlestown and the Aero Oil Company of New Oxford after a December 7 crash in Bonneauville. The Feemans claim their car was demolished and seek damages for loss of the vehicle and for pain and suffering.

Bishop Leech to Receive LL.D at Villanova Graduation

Bishop George L. The East Berlin Lions Club held a director’s meeting last Thursday at Lou’s Restaurant with 13 present. John Phillips was appointed a director to replace Ralph Buyer who moved to California. A later regular meeting occurred Tuesday at Herishey Heights with fifty present.

Cars Collide At Cross Keys Intersection

Two cars collided early Monday at the Cross Keys intersection causing about 1900 in damage. Robert J. Pawloski 21 of Danbury Conn drove through a stop sign and struck Sanita Hoover 21 of Manchester R 1 broadside. Hoover car sustained about 1460 in damage. State police at Gettysburg substation reported minor injuries and continued investigation.

The Adams County Council of Republican Women held its annual picnic Tuesday at 6 30 p m in Ville Community Park. Flags Requested for New Oxford Carnival Parade

New Oxford borough residents are urged to display flags this Saturday to brighten the parade at 6 p.m. Officials say area fire companies will participate and the display honors the New Oxford Fire Company’s 75th anniversary. Old Glory should be shown to help celebrate the occasion.

East Berlin 4H Club met at the elementary school with 13 girls present. President Mary Eshleman appointed committees for fair exhibits at Adams County and South Mountain Fairs. Helen Tunison led a table service and etiquette demo and Mary Eshleman demonstrated grooming a dog. Next meeting August 7 at 1 p.m. to prepare a 4 H roundup exhibit at the South Mountain Fairgrounds.

Hanover Days Festival Opens Friday in Hanover

Hanover Mid-Town Merchants sponsor Hanover Days this Friday and Saturday with about fifty stores open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. A Mr Hanover Days will mingle among shoppers giving away 10 silver dollars each hour. Over $3,000 in cash and merchandise prizes plus store prizes. Free curb and tot parking available during the two days.

Fire destroys brooder house on Berlin Road farm

A fire of undetermined origin gutted a small unused brooder base on the Curtis Miller farm near New Oxford on Tuesday evening. New Oxford firemen responded at 9 15 p m. The loss was reported as limited and the exact amount is undetermined.

A Chilean exchange student Doris Alcalde daughter of Mr and Mrs Petre A Alcalde from La Serena Chile will study at Delone Catholic High School during the 1962 1963 school year in New Oxford. State Senator Elmer Hawbaker will address Saturday events. Parade routes involve New Oxford High School grounds and surrounding streets with traffic detours and no parking on Pleasant George S Peters streets. Doris plans to return to South America in July 1963 after attending Delone Catholic High School and staying with Mr and Mrs Ryland Robinson in Washington DC.

Farm Credit Group Set Picnic and Meeting August 9

About 1,500 Farm Credit Coop members from Adams York Cumberland Perry Franklin and Fulton counties will attend the Carlisle Production Credit Association and the Federal Land Bank Association of York annual picnic and stockholders meeting at the South Mountain Fairgrounds near Arendtsville. Business session begins at 10 a.m. with reports and director elections. A noon barbecued chicken dinner follows, with afternoon games and 60 door prizes donated by local businesses.

Dean's List student from McSherrys town earns honor at Penn State

Daniel G. Miller, an electrical engineering sophomore from McSherrys town, qualified for Penn State's dean's list for the spring term with a 3.7 average. He is the only Adams County student on the list among 1,432 honorees. Hail Storm Shakes Adams County Crops and Fires York Springs Barn

A damaging hail, wind and lightning storm swept Adams County on Monday, striking New Oxford and Upper Adams areas hardest. One inch of rain fell in New Oxford with high winds, while hail up to golf ball size battered Upper Adams for up to 45 minutes. A fire started by lightning at the Charles Gembe poultry farm near York Springs destroyed top barn hay and required three hours to control. Fire units from Hampton and East Berlin aided, with water brought from York Springs. The storm, followed by a lighter one an hour later, brought the heaviest rain in 10 months, easing drought but threatening crops and prompting ongoing relief efforts.

Courthouse Exterior Cleaning and Repainting Bid Won

Adams County commissioners awarded a $10 380 contract to Fred Eisenbrandt Inc Baltimore to clean the courthouse exterior repaint the main section The plan uses chemical solvents high pressure water or steam to clean the surface and repoint deteriorated brick replacing damaged brick to match the old color A five percent silica water repellent will be applied after cleaning No sand blasting planned The repainting covers the main section with future work possible if extensive repointing is needed on other sections.

Army Pvt. David E. McCartney Jr. of York Springs R. 2, son of residents of York Springs, was assigned to the 7th Division's Infantry in Korea. He serves as assistant gunner in Company C after basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and is a graduate of Bermudian Springs High School.
