A reader letter complains of sidewalk obstacles in Enid Street area and along the town walk. Shrubbery overgrowth, narrow paths, and blocked spaces near a veranda create danger for pedestrians. The writer urges council action to clear backyards alleys and widen routes for public safety and comfort.
William A. Robinson of York Springs R C enters the fifth annual National Junior Vegetable Growers Association contest among youths from 45 states. He competes for a 96 000 scholarship fund with awards including a national championship, four regional prizes of 200, and 38 sectional gifts of 100 each. War bonds await outstanding contestants in each state. The contest aims to boost food production and tie accomplishments to studies in production and marketing. A hospital returnee to the States from the Philippines is now under care at Woodrow Wilson General Hospital in Staunton, Virginia.
The Aflams County Board of School Directors approved a August 10 inspection for 42 buses across 10 districts with state policemen from Gettysburg inspecting at Biglerville and Gettysburg between 9 and 11 30 a m. Drivers listed for morning inspection include district officials from Bendersville Huntington Latimore Menallen and Tyrone, with a second list for afternoon at the state highway department building in Fairfield Road.
State police search for Mildred Hoak 24 formerly of East Berlin who vanished about two years ago and was last heard from in Piorida. No contact for a year.
Clyde Storm Hanover was identified July 20 as the driver in a hit and run on the Hanover Carlisle highway near Bethlehem quarry. A damaged hub cap traced the car to the scene. Storm's car sideswiped a machine owned by Mrs M D Crouse of Hanover causing $40 damage. Crouse was driving south. Storm paid $10 fine and costs before Justice Kuhn of Conewago township for reckless driving.
Mr and Mrs John EB McDonnell of Gettysburg celebrate the 55th anniversary of their July 16 wedding day. The couple married in Gettysburg and are noted residents.
A military high mass was held in Saareg Meart chapel for Sgt Henry Q Klunek 19 year old gunner from Rock Manover R D 4 killed in action over Yugoslavia January 31 The Very Rev John F O'Donnell celebrated with Harold H Barr Post No 14 American Legion members present Chaplain Charles S Diller led the detail Honor guard included Sgt Clair L Miller and privates Joseph Smith Leo Krichten John Staub Warren George Richard Kress Bugler Guy S Thoman.
