42 Lost In Shipwreck On California Coast
San Francisco January 4 two ships collided off Cape Mendocino when the steamship Walla Walla met the French bark Siax. The Walla Walla sank in 35 minutes with about 42 lost. Survivors drifted, some rescued by the Dispatch to Eureka. Captain Halil reports ships foundered after a lengthy struggle with heavy seas and darkness.

Fishing steamer Sparta missing feared lost with all hands
Atlantic City January 6 families of Captain J Albert Sooy and the Sparta crew say all hope is gone. The fishing steamer, last heard to be damaged here Thursday, may have sunk with six named sailors and engineer Cummings. Searchers continue vainly along the coast for any sign of the vessel or crew.

Double Tragedy in Camden: Father and Son Shot Dead
Philadelphia, Jan 8. The Caskey men Joseph Sr. 60 and Joseph Jr. 30 were found slain in the yard of their Ninth and Walnut Street home Camden N J. The son was shot in the right temple the father in the mouth a revolver lay beside the elder. No witnesses. Local theory says the father killed the son then killed himself amid family quarrels over property. The elder leaves a wife and daughter the younger a wife and two children.

MANY KILLED BY CAVE IN AT NEGEUNEES MINE
A cave in at the Negeunees mine trapped about 13 to 17 miners while most were at dinner. Names known include Sam Williams John Sullivan John Pascoe John Married and Jacob Huatella. A rescue party of 15 experienced miners began work as pumps failed and water filled the shaft.
