Books from Dr Baish Library to Adams County Free
More than 800 volumes from the late Dr Henry Houston Baish estate have been donated to the Adams County Free Library. The collection covers many subjects with emphasis on education and religion and includes several children’s books. The donor, Miles Oller, says the books are in excellent condition and will join the library's holdings soon. Dr Baish, born February 11 1874 in Aspers, was a long time executive secretary of the State School Employees Retirement System and a native of Adams County. He studied at Shippensburg Normal School and Lebanon Valley College, earning a master’s degree in 1903.

Dr Baish Pioneered State Education And Retirement Systems
Dr Baish taught at Harvard and Penn and led Altoona Public Schools from 1908 to 1917. He served as chief clerk of the U S Bureau of Education in 1917 18 then established the Harrisburg retirement system for school employees and directed it until his retirement in 1944. He was active in the United Brethren in Christ church and chaired the State Education Association.
