Harrisburg report shows 17 000 Pennsylvania high school seniors outperformed national averages in mathematics reasoning and fundamentals while lagging in reading comprehension vocabulary and spelling. Over half failed to exceed eleventh grade level in vocabulary and reading, with 70 percent unable to spell as well as the average eleventh grader.
Theodore Pfeiffer Camp No. 60 of the Sons of Union Veterans in New Oxford installed officers at a meeting in the Camp Armory. Officers include Commander James DeVine and senior vice commander John De Groff with several other posts. Installation conducted by Lt. Col. Colvin Bryan with Col. C. G. MacPherson delivering remarks on the group's work.
About forty people attended the East Berlin unit PTA meeting on Tuesday evening. Rev Amos Meyers supervising principal spoke on One School And One Community. Silbert Seavers from Shippensburg State College discussed Legislature. Charles Phillips elementary principal explained transportation and noon lunch hour for students.

Weather permitting the New Oxford Explorer Scout Post will conduct a paper drive throughout the community on Saturday February 5 starting at 5 pm. Residents should place papers in bundles at the curb. If weather is inclement the drive moves to Saturday March 4.

Gerald Mumemert son of Mrs Elmer Memmert of East Berlin made the dean’s list for the first semester at Susquehanna University Selinsgrove Pa He is among 3 percent of students and one of 14 freshmen on the list.

The seventh anniversary of Farm Family Life Insurance Company will be celebrated with a state roundup meeting all day this Thursday February 23 at the Chalet Restaurant in Dillsburg. Marvin McLain of the American Farm Bureau Federation will discuss national legislative issues affecting farmers and the Washington political outlook. Slides will show how Pennsylvania Farm Association services members including farm analysis and insurance.

Joseph E Post of Hanover R 5 has been named a distinguished military student for the 1990 61 school year by Lt Col Thomas A Duke Jr at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia He is listed as an economics major and a member of the class of 1961 at the college.

More than 100 Cubs, prospective Cubs, parents and friends attended the New Oxford Cub Scout Pack 125 Blue and Gold banquet at the local fire hall. Mrs James Schwenk presented a new 50 star flag, accepted by cubmaster Howard Bream. Awards and pins were given to numerous scouts including Webb Hocken smith, Wayne Wagner, Edward Zinn, and Stephen Gebhart. Girl Scouts from New Oxford Troop 49 served as waitresses for the event.
Stephen Ray Bowers died at his parents home at 3 on Saturday. Born January 1, he was the first baby born at Annie M. Warner Hospital this year. Survived by Hershey and Betty Ecker Bowers and siblings Hershey Ecker Gettysburg Nellie Bowers and George Bowers. Services Sunday at 2 p.m. Brethren in Christ Church Hanover conducted by Rev. Paul Martin Jr. Burial Heidlersburg Cemetery.
The New Oxford Adult Patrol elected officers for another year at its recent borough office meeting. President is Mrs. Clarence Noel, vice president Mrs. Paul Harbaugh, secretary Mrs. Martin Alleman, and treasurer Mrs. Ethel Bean. Members urged volunteers and a food sale was planned for April 2.
The ninth annual builders' show sponsored by Hanover Exchange Club runs today and tomorrow 6 to 10 pm and Saturday noon to 1 pm at Kuhn's auto sales room Clearview Shopping Center 1000 block Carlisle St Hanover.
