At Camp Meade on Friday Mess Sergeant Charles H. Mansberger of Company A 316th Infantry was sentenced to one year at hard labor for bringing alcohol into the camp on Christmas Eve. He reportedly tried to reenter in civilian clothes with a basket holding beer whiskey and wine. Additional charges included evading military police and wearing civilian garments.

Residence Destroyed by Fire on Mt. Joy Farm
A brick mansion on Samuel Swartz’s farm near Gettysburg in Mt. Joy township was destroyed by a chimney fire about 5 PM Friday. Calvin Fissel and Mrs. Fissel, alone with several children, tried to save the second floor then the first floor before flames forced their retreat. Neighbors, delayed by high waters, arrived too late to save the structure, though the first floor furnishings were mostly recovered and the other buildings were saved. The house, built in 1860, was an old Mt. Joy landmark and was insured.

Explosion Kills Four Soldiers In France Training Area
An accidental explosion in a French school training area killed four enlisted men and injured a lieutenant and forty soldiers.
