Local briefs note birthday celebrations and births in Hanover area families. Reports include births at Hanover General Hospital, engagements, property assessments, and community events such as the Granite Home Economics club meeting and a Valentine party hosted by Abbottstown Luther league.
The New Oxford Owls invite basketball fans to the New Oxford high school gym for a feature game against the Huntington County All-Stars. Owls players note limited local support and urge residents to turnout and back the team at Saturday's event.
The wedding of Zillah Pope and Richard A. Smith took place at 7:30 AM Saturday in Immaculate Conception church. Rev. Robert D. Hartnett officiated with Mrs. Thomas French at the organ. The ceremony, followed by a breakfast at Rambler Inn, united two families from Spring Grove and New Oxford with plans to reside near Seven Hundred school house.
Local residents report illnesses and recoveries, sightings of blue birds, and travel. Births at Hanover hospital, hospitalizations for injuries, and a range of social visits are noted. Hanover borough receives 2200 funds for water filtration project with total cost around 40850. Mrs. Cora Staub of Midway announced the engagement at a Wednesday party for her daughter Miss Mary Staub to Francis J. Topper son of John L. Pie enltimeeredhiguety ye Sarracrapberg Jonelle. Miss Staub recently completed nursing training at St. Anne hospital in Washington and has nursing experience in Canton Ohio. Topper served nearly five years in field artillery with overseas time and is employed at a glove store in Hanover. No wedding date set.
Smiths Furniture store on Hanover Street marks its fifth anniversary. Proprietor Clayton P. Smith thanks the public for four years of patronage and invites customers to view the complete line of new and slightly used furniture at Roth Bacc. Grossway Jewelers, Hapover, Pa.
Obituaries report John Joseph Breighner 63 of Hanover died after an extended illness. Survivors include daughter Mrs. Henry N. Smith and siblings Emma Caster Susan Devine Maggie Bortner Carla Garrett and Edward Breighner. Funeral at St Joseph's Hanover with Conewago Cemetery interment. Augustus E Dayhoff 88 died at Gettysburg home of his son in law and daughter after two years of declining health. He leaves 10 children 57 grandchildren 45 great grandchildren and one sister. Funeral Monday at Littlestown with Rev Howard Schley Fox and Taneytown Reformed cemetery. Calvin Miller 86 of Wrightsville formerly New Oxford died Saturday in Millar home. Survived by two daughters Mrs Millar Mrs David Eline a son Stanley Miller 13 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren funeral Tuesday in Hanover. John H Leese 76 near Hampton New Oxford R1 died Friday after long illness. Surviving children Harry Leese Malcolm Leese Maurice Leese and others. funeral Sunday at W A Feiser funeral home with Christ Reformed church interment in Christ Church cemetery. Melvin Hoover John Stock and Howard Treiber noted in closing.

Judge W. Sheely upheld Stewart P. Mehring's two cruelty to animals convictions and three unlicensed dogs charges. The opinion describes overcrowded pens, lack of water or food, mangy and diseased dogs, and dogs soaked in crankcase oil, deeming the neglect cruel. Sentencing set for March 10.
Mrs. Crist Chronister plans a public sale of livestock farming implements and poultry from the late husband’s estate at the farm near East Berlin on Friday February 28. The sale comes after the husband’s death from a blood clot following a hospital discharge. Also notes local ads for Everwear aluminum roofing and clothing, plus tax filing services.

Harry E. Walker age 48 of Thomasville RR 1 died Monday after a tree limb struck him while felling trees between Hampton and East Berlin for Leon F Herman. He died of a fractured skull at Hanover hospital. Survivors include his widow Anna, four daughters, a stepson, a son Arnold, seven grandchildren, two sisters, and a sister-in-law. Interment at Mumert's Meeting House cemetery near East Berlin.
The New Oxford Lions club entertained their ladies at a roast pig and sauer kraut dinner at the Cross Keys Diner on Wednesday. Guests included District Governor Prof and Mrs Ivan R Mechdy and Mr and Mrs Clair Mumper and others.
