Two slick strangers attempted the three card monte scam on Joseph Holtz of Pitt Street near New Oxford. A town tale recounts how the con men, led by a man named Robinson of Littlestown, recruited Holtz with farm talk, offered a buggy ride, and pressed him to bet large sums after a showy display of banknotes. Holtz resisted, but the plot moved past New Chester toward New Oxford before the trio vanished. a buggy accident involving Charles Biffle’s party followed elsewhere.
The annual picnic at Pfeiffer's Grove New Oxford will be held Saturday July 30 1904 from 9 am to 7 pm. A large dancing floor and first class orchestra will provide music and refreshments will be served at moderate rates. No intoxicating liquors allowed and weather plans include a postponement to Monday or the next fair day.
