Multiple residents depart or move for employment across Maryland New Jersey Ohio and Florida. People from Gettysburg Hancock and surrounding towns take new hires in mills arms rubber and auto sectors. others visit relatives or attend church activities as Fr Reucher takes vacation and a new organ is planned for St Pauls McSherrystown.
A series of marriages is recorded: Albert Boaserman of Reading township wed Agnes M. Nitchman of Latimore township at East Berlin Reform church parsonage with Rev. Ditzler officiating. Helen Ciscle and Arthur Eby married in Corpus Christi church by Rev. Fr. Smith. Earle Gitt and Daisy Clarke united in Chestertown M E church with Rev. Beauchamp. Mary Hoffman and Emmanuel Sinner wed at York parsonage with Rev. Fastnacht. they plan to live on the John Myers farm near East Berlin. Mary Walters and Lloyd Palmer married by Rev. Shelly in Littlestown.
Nathaniel J. Waltman sells his farm near New Chester to Proctor Snyder and a 6 acre adjoining tract to John Stitt. Waltman buys a 6 acre property near Guldens Station from Rufus Sponseller and plans a March 9 public sale of stock and implements before moving. Varvey Bollinger buys Charles B Tate property opposite Eagle Hotel in Gettysburg and moves by April 1. D Guy Hollinger trustee sells 122 acre Paradise township farm to C H Bittinger for 7200. James Weikert buys Mervin Van Dyke 2 story brick dwelling in Gettysburg.
Mr and Mrs John H Duttera Lincoln Way Westerr welcome a daughter. Mr and Mrs Maurice W King Latimore township greet a daughter. Mr and Mrs O C Rice Butler township welcome a son. Mr and Mrs Donald Neely Fairfield announce a daughter. Mr and Mrs David Bosserman Hamilton township welcome a daughter. Mr and Mrs Charles Crawford near Abbottstown announce a son. Mr and Mrs Cletus Staub Orange street greet a son.
A series of obituaries and notices from Hanover and surrounding towns recount the deaths of William Porte aged 64 at Hampstead, Peter S. Trimmer aged 80 at York, Cecelia Fridinger aged 78 in Hanover, Jacob Altland about 44 near East Berlin, Simon Melhorn aged 63 in Philadelphia, Jesse Crawford aged 48 in Hanover, and Samuel Trimmer aged 45 in Philadelphia. Also noted are Gettysburg College recognition, a new military detail, a horse incident on Lincoln Way, an upcoming parish hall dance, a barn fire in Cold Springs area with losses, a small blaze near the railroad bridge, and Hanover's drive to raise 965000 for a new M C A building.
Reports detail several farm sales led by Daniel C. Shanebrook Edward Heiser and John H Shaffer with totals from $1012 to $4239.34 Best prices include horse 183 cow 105 and brood sow 64 Shoats reach 25. Adams County Farm Bureau seeks up to 1500 to hire a year long government farm adviser. A York Springs cow doctor fainted from indigestion. A Littletown fire caused minor damage from a meat drop incident and a school board plans for salaries before Thursday meeting.

Miller, Mrs. Henry Waltman, Mrs. Joseph Ocker, Miss Catharine Strasbaugh, Mrs. Louisa Mollison, Prof Chas. Albright’s son Richard, Mrs. Harry Whitcomb, Mrs. Kate Phillips, Andrew J. Baker, a Hoke family child, C. Clark Brown, Mrs. Jos. Berkheimer, Mrs. Annie Bream, Mrs. Sarah Spangler, Miss Mary Snyder, and Mrs. Arthur Roth, with scarlet fever, pneumonia, heart trouble, and other ailments noted in Abbottstown and nearby towns.
Eric Hanson of Hanover was moved to the Soldiers Hospital in Washington DC for gangrene in his right foot after weeks of illness. In nearby events, Lester Lerch of Middletown and Wm Armor of Gettysburg were in a collision with a trolley in Harrisburg. Lerch injured, Armor unhurt. Additional items note hospitalizations and operations for several residents, a work opening at Iron Springs Grit mill, and a forthcoming church communion at Pines Lutheran on February 18.
The notice urges council and the bureau to inspect fire plugs to prevent freezing in emergencies. Chronister of Hampton, intoxicated after leaving Hotel Hampton, lost his team, wandered back into town, then walked toward Hamp ton. The missing horse and buggy were found the next morning by A J Smith, with the horse cold and tethered. Eckert's men claimed the horse later as Chronister was located.
Francis X Miller aged about 50 of Lincoln Way West died at 6 15 am Wednesday from pneumonia. He worked for his brother W J Miller the Centre Square butcher. He is survived by his wife Laura Witter daughter of the late Gen F Witter of New Chester ill at her sister’s home in York his mother Mrs Jerome Miller and a large extended family including brothers Chas Ignatiay W J Joseph and sisters Mrs Wm Bear Mrs Geo F Rabine Mrs J Flesh man and Mrs Mervin Cashman plus step sister Mrs Geo Stratbaugh. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
County Detective Wilson identified a woman who visited multiple Gettysburg businesses last week and secured items by misrepresentation. He visited her Reading township home on Wednesday and reached a satisfactory settlement. no further prosecution was pursued. The family is said to be poor and the name is withheld.
A Kauffman bread wagon was upset when a colt pulling the wagon bolted on the road to Finntown, injuring driver Paul Kauffman and scattering bread. Walter Shanabrook, a 35-year-old baseball player from Columbia, was killed by a falling wall at the Herr Building ruins during a fire. A car skidded into a woodshed near Cashtown with minor damage, while Lizzie Ross of Hanover suffered injuries from a fall after vertigo at a church service. Edgar M. Faber of Gettysburg earned a chemistry scholarship at Johns Hopkins University for the upcoming year. A parcel post sale in Center Square raised $40 for King’s Adult Bible Class. A pocketbook was found at a F. and M. Bank.
The United States refused to enter negotiations with Germany over submarine warfare until Germany revokes its unrestricted war policy and restores the Sussex pledges. The State Department released Germany’s memorandum via Dr Paul Ritter and the U S reply, noting no further talks while the policy stands. Additionally, naval officials discussed arming merchant ships with guns and convoy questions, while separate items report a Chicago burglary incident and a Lancaster widow receiving a stranger’s $65 repayment for an old theft.
