Local events discuss plans toward New Oxford Hampstead Newton bicentennial celebration at Sons of The Armory. Various community updates mention Esther Feizver recovering from typhoid, a minor motor collision with no injuries, court actions in Oxford, and upcoming Scout and church activities with several local residents noted by name.
Regular February session of the New Oxford town council with all members present granted bills for stone and coal and various services. The street committee reported Berlin road repairs and planned Mill road work. a water rent matter was referred to the water committee. an ordinance to empower state highway permits was rejected. speed limit signs were displayed but no action taken.
At Firemens Hall on February 5, the president appointed drivers and patrols among others, naming Allen Brashears James Moore Bernard Robinson David O'Brien James Shover Harry Lough Guy Klingel Francis Rabine and more. Bids ordered paid include Central garage A P Wagner Mary Ramer Allen Hockensmith and Guy Klingel.
The New Oxford sophomore class program began with devotional readings by Ralph Miller and a reading by John Duttera on 1932 Automobiles from the Literary Digest. The Bells of St. Mary’s were sung, then Elton Gable’s trumpet and David Alwine’s clarinet duet Hazel. Anna Kohler read The Brook's Song. Miss Mary Margaret Rupp gave a short talk on Progress, followed by Maroon and Grey.
Friday teachers meeting well attended by teachers patrons and pupils. Prof Gaige delivered detailed lecture on Washington's life not widely known. Meeting decided this year ends but the organization continues next school year. New Oxford high school to present a program Tuesday for George Washington bicentennial with band providing music.
Gen William W Bankert and Dora Delap wed February 1 near Heidlersburg with plans to live with the bride’s father. Elmer Moul and wife visited William F Shull near Belmont. Miss Nancy Jane Spangler suffers head healing. real estate of the late George Groscost withdrawn for lack of bids. Families travel between York Springs Gardners Gardners Station and Heidlersburg for visits and birthday celebrations.
One hundred twenty Adams county farmers attended the annual Adams county farm bureau meeting at the court house Tuesday afternoon. President Frank A. Waybright presided as Murray D. Lincoln spoke on cooperative purchasing and legislation. Other speakers were H A Hanneman of the state bureau of markets Harrisburg on cooperative fruit handling, Roland Benjamin of Bradford county on organization work, and W E Beanblossom on further bureau organization. A reorganization meeting under the 1929 act is planned, with a future organization meeting at the Fairfield schoolhouse.
A series of local marriages were announced with ceremonies held in churches and parsonages in and around Hanover. Corinne Therit wed Claude Eyler in Washington D C on March 21 1931. Pauline Myers and Louis C Lippy joined in Littlestown. Florence Fissel and Richard Fleming married in Red Lion. Dorothy Keefer and Merle Koontz wed in Littlestown. Edward Marshall and Carrie Kuhn married in York area. Margaret Staley and Leroy Gordon were married in Littlestown.
Huntington township welcomes Nancy Rose Henry born February 1 to Mr. and Mrs. George H. Henry. Hanover announces a daughter for James E. Cover on a Wednesday. Orrtanna R. D. reports a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Mc Kendrick on Friday. Gettysburg parents James E. Stall welcome a son born Sunday. Gettysburg couple Emmett C. Longe necker announce a daughter born Thursday.
Senator Reed and former Rep Elgin helped Mandilla Nitchman of York Springs obtain a monthly federal pension raise from 40 to 50 dollars. She is the widow of John Nitchman who served with Company 1 in the 56th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and was discharged July 1 1965. The increase was added by the Senate during concurrence after not being in the omnibus bill.
Cedar Ridge news notes Mr. and Mrs. Gail Stiner of Port Washington New York spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. A F Stiner in Cedar Ridge LG. Herman misplaced a knife on Sugartown road last week. Mrs Inash Stiner and Mrs Emma Wagner are noted as quilt piecers and crochet makers of Sugartown. The Item acknowledges receipt of Sunday visitor items but space limits publishing.
Death notices report Mrs. Lee Blair 88 of New Oxford dying in Martinsburg West Virginia with son Frank Blair of Easton. Other deaths include Mrs. Harriet Sadler of New Oxford aged 78 with extensive family survivors and funeral at Lau home New Oxford. Michael L. Chronister dies near Bermudian at 56 with service at Lower Berndian Reformed Church. Mrs. George A. Becker dies at 57 in Midway. Maquilla Roberts widow of Frederick Roberts dies at Jackson township aged about 70. Ida Swartzbaugh Hanover dies after decade long invalid status. Andrew D Spangler dies at Spring Grove after dining with daughter Mrs. Chronister. Continued on page four.

Relatives receive word of the birth of Joan Marlene Warnick to Carl and Mrs Warnick of Mt Union born January 30. Mrs Warnick formerly lived in Green Springs. Almony Welty recovers from surgery at Hanover hospital. A Day of Prayer at Green Springs Evangelical church featured a program arranged by Miss Elenora Bertzel. The play Deacon Dubbs is set for February 18 at 7 30 pm at the Green Springs church, by Sunshine class members of the First United Brethren taught by Mrs J B Weeks.
Mrs Prudence EK Cish of Abingtonstown will get $30 per month starting February 4 under a Hoover signed bill promoted by Congressman Haines. A separate Haines measure would extend the star route from Frederick to Littlestown via Taneytown, expanding beyond the current 12 mile limit and benefiting rural residents who have long sought the service.
The report lists named students in grades one through senior who were neither absent nor tardy in January. It records high overall attendance with January at 96 percent and term to date at 97 percent, while the high school shows 98 percent for January and the term.
Washington officials announce a deal after months of negotiations in which the Treasury Department purchased the Wilkins Building from Joseph H Himes for five hundred thousand dollars in cash. The structure will house veteran affairs offices temporarily and later join the Treasury annex complex as part of downtown real estate expansion.

The annual World Day of Prayer service will be held Friday at 2 PM in St. Pauls Reformed church New Oxford with women from Methodist Lutheran and Reformed churches uniting. A second service follows at Zalmanuel Reformed Abbotstown Friday at 7 PM with Lutheran and Reformed cooperation.
Twenty seven cows in the Adams county cow testing association produced over 1200 pounds of milk each in January. Thirty eight cows exceeded 1000 pounds and 32 yielded more than 40 pounds butterfat. The ten best averaged 17139 pounds milk and 59.48 butterfat. A church mission to be opened at BA Marys Catholic church Sunday morning.
