Sixteen year old Helen Martin of Gettysburg High School won the Adams County cherry pie contest at Biglerville High School with 85 percent, edging DuLores Kapp of Biglerville. The prize gives her county representation at the state contest in Gettysburg with judges noting a close call.

Remains of Pvt Nesbury Brandt who was killed in Italy on April 15 1945 have been returned to the United States his widow Mrs Mary Katherine Johnston Brandt of New Oxford R 2 has been notified Among 5205 Americans brought home from the Mediterranean aboard the Corporal Eric G Gibson 347 were returned on kin instructions in Pennsylvania Brandt a resident of Crardners R 1 worked at Brandt Brothers garage before enlistment He was inducted December 23 1943 trained at Port McClellan and Fort Benning and died while serving with mountain troops in Italy He left four children and one brother Sgt Bernie Brandt was with the Seventh Army in Germany

Student Nurse Operated on Sunday in Philadelphia
Miss Caroline Culver of Gettysburg, daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward L Culver, underwent an appendicitis operation Sunday evening at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia where she is a student nurse. She is reported to be doing nicely after returning to Gettysburg for the weekend. Local surgeons diagnosed appendicitis and sent her to Philadelphia for the operation.
