In Indianapolis on Feb 4 Captain John K. Gowdy, Republican state central chair, relayed General Harrison’s letter rejecting a nomination. He states he will not allow his name at St Louis and thanks Indiana friends. Gowdy adds Indiana leans McKinley with some Allison support. Reed unlikely to gain strength.
Cleveland and Des Moines dispatches relay reactions to ex-President Harrison’s decision not to seek renomination. Hanna and Foraker predict McKinley gains from Harrison’s withdrawal, Indiana and central west support swelling. Iowa and New York leaders foresee Morton strengthening and a convention contest ahead.
Lord Salisbury at a banquet argues Britain cannot suppress Turks and Armenians. He defends Monroe doctrine as understood by President Monroe and warns against misreading England’s capacity to intervene in distant conflicts. He冷 suggests only military occupation could alter such entanglements, noting England lacks the reach for such action.
A powerful blast at 10 30 last night tore into Broadway south side causing massive destruction. Two men died, engineer John Lee of Melrose and fireman Alexander Gordon of Buffalo, N Y, from the engine house with two large iron compressed air tanks for sewer drill power. Women’s bodies were found mangled in the ruins.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a resolution censuring Ambassador Bayard for his Boston and Edinburgh speeches. A second resolution expresses disapproval of representatives abroad discussing American political affairs and displaying partisanship.
In Washington on Feb 5 the belated tariff bill moved from the finance committee to the senate with a free silver coinage amendment replacing the original. Senator Quay pressed to recommit for separate tariff and free silver bills but was blocked by parliamentary objections. His recommitment resolution will be taken up under the rules today.
The American liner St Paul, stuck in sand off Lone Branch for ten days, was pulled free just before 10 am as tide rose to half high. Strong wind and good seas aided the ship which then slid into deep water and reached New York piers at 1 39 pm without injury.
Captain Andersen of the Psophper reports the Bell tank steamer Wildnewrr failed to arrive in England after leaving Philadelphia for France. The Wild Rover has not been heard of since. Andersen claims the vessel was blown to pieces off the Irish coast during a violent incident, with all twenty nine crew lost.
Privaveiriia reports February 3 fire in Philadelphia destroying Charles H. Masritine’s seven story building on Cressnut street and the adjacent five store structure of the American Bantit Publication society, with other losses including the Hotel Lafayette and the Haseltine gallery. Estimated value of losses given as sixty thousand dollars.
A week’s condensed news reports indictments for salary grabbing in Dubique Iowa and a fatal boiler explosion at a Georgia mill. Other items include embezzlement charges against a Boston clerk, senatorial nominations, Cuban belligerent rights discussions, and notable deaths, robberies, accidents, resignations, and political shifts across the United States and Europe.
In Philalti Miia Feb 4 the supreme court heard an appeal by the defense in the Thouenes case from the refusal of a motion for a new trial. Samuel P Hotan and RO. Moon argued for the applicant while Attorney Graham spoke against the appeal. The court received Me 14601100.
A long bulletin of state wire items reports drownings on the Lehigh canal, commutations in Wilkes-Barre and Allegheny County cases, a Port Providence girl burned to death, a large coal mine gas explosion injuring workers, a factory strike settlement at Eleanor Ironworks, and a 77 year old locomotive engineer’s death in Columbia. Also noted are sharp accident tallies in Shamokin, a Scottdale post office burglary, Standard Oil reorganization talk in Pittsburgh, a Philadelphia youth labeled a religious maniac, a Wayne Electric Light plant fire, a vein of iron ore found near Zmar, a Rock Run accident leaving two blind and burned, and a murder case verdict in Hallipsa Teer Ra.
