The infant Willis Howe is welcomed by Mr and Mrs Willa Yeagy. Several residents recover from illness as Lincoln's birthday bank closures are announced. New Oxford clubs meet with charity donations and baptism rites are reported. Public notices include births, illnesses, and local civic group activities at Hanover.
Boy Scout Troop 8&5 holds a paper drive in New Oxford on Saturday February 8. Residents should place paper outdoors for quick collection. For pick up call 130 R 13. Proceeds fund a memorial for David Dennis at the new camp.
A Buick sedan driven by Henry Huffnagie of New Oxford veered off Hanover highway after a right front tire burst. The car rolled several times, clipping a power pole, ending on its side in a field. Huffnagie and Angela Myers of Bonneauville escaped with minor cuts and bruises. They were treated at Hanover hospital. Estimated damage about 550 dollars. No charges filed.
Miss Jean Conrad daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Conrad McSherrystown wed Charles N Arige son of Mr and Mrs Vincent A Arige Hanover in a Nuptial Mass at the church of the Annunciation. The ceremony was performed by Rev Anthony McGinley with a large attendance. Bride wore ivory satin with a long train and carried a white bouquet. Attendant Jeune Matthews wore blue taffeta. Best man Joseph Murren. ushers Harold Conrad and Vincent S Arigo. A breakfast followed at a local hotel and a reception at Parkville Fire Hall. The couple will reside with the groom’s parents.
Mrs. Albert Kuhn was admitted to Warner hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Brashears celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on February 1. Clair Grover of East Berlin was charged for failing to signal properly before Justice Buraley. Ladies' Aid met at Mrs. Sheffer’s home. Groft will celebrate his 77th birthday February 8 and plans a public sale February 15. Ralph Klingel spent vacation with parents. Girl Scouts cooked apple crisp and planned a Valentine party. Students returned from vacations at Indiana State Teachers’ College and Gettysburg College. Victoria Lingg returned to Philadelphia after five weeks with relatives. Missionary Society met at Mrs. Wilbur Miller’s home. Dinner guests included the Bennetts and others from nearby towns. Adams County Farm Bureau sale bought by Vernon Rife for $2900. Farm Bureau to move to larger quarters. The Alwine family spent the weekend with Rev. Ritter’s family. Hanover Eagles defeated New Oxford 26 to 22. Miller led with 18. Max Coulson promoted at Holabird Signal Depot. Birth announced: Jeffery Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. Atlee Robert of Lancaster. Gates family to move to Alliance, Ohio. Borough of New Oxford Adams County Pennsylvanias strict traffic rules publish enforcement targets including unattended running engines parked cars stop sign and red light violations improper curb parking wrong way driving intoxication noisy conduct drunkenness and bicycle obstruction. Chief Minale assists in the regulatory rollout dated February 3 1947.
The New Oxford Post No 8728 Veterans of Foreign Wars seeks World War I and II veterans for membership before February 18 1947. Current enrollment hits 45 of about half the eligible locals. A meeting is set Monday at 8 pm in the Sons of Veterans Armory. Also soliciting funds for Post Colors to debut at Memorial Day services.
The Adams County Free Library New Oxford branch moved February 1 to the Livingston building second floor adding about 800 books. A library meeting is set for Thursday at 7 30 pm with Fred Gable and Mrs. George E. Sheffer supervising. Citizens may visit, obtain a library card, and borrow free as the 1947 membership includes 87 adults 9 juniors 4 groups and 2 life members.
Miss Breighner Breighner Sone is the granddaughter of Gettysburg residents Mr. and Mrs. Pius Breighner. A Columbia University graduate, she pursues postgraduate study at New York University. Former Gettysburg residents included Harry and Mrs. Genevieve Ramner Breighner.
A notice from Weaver Newsdealer states ongoing paper shortages will reduce daily service and may suspend Sunday deliveries until regular quotas resume, urging customers to expect changes this week.
Miss Sue Howe of Abbottstown dies at 78 after six weeks illness at her sister Mrs. Martin Kime’s Gettysburg home. John H Tawney of McSherrystown dies suddenly at Pairfield Shoe factory. services held with Catholic rites and military honors.
The Nu Ox Rod and Game Club met in the high school Tuesday evening with three McSherrystown members present. The group plans to donate state bird posters to New Oxford schools and display them in Hemminger's window. They discussed chick pheasant and state fish and game programs and agreed to pursue a merger with the Fish and Game Association for shared advantages. A shooting match is planned for early March and six new members joined. Joseph I. Weaver marks his 45th anniversary as New Oxford’s newspaper carrier on March 1.
At the February meeting of the New Oxford Town Council the budget for 1947 was presented and tentatively accepted with a 15 mill tax rate proposed, a 5% increase from the previous 9 1/2 mills. The report includes detailed receipts, expenditures, and a library fund contribution.
Charles Bowser of Abbottstown was arrested by Gettysburg state police on a larceny charge. Earl Dusman of Hanover R D says Bowser took a watch from his home Sunday morning. The case was presented to Justice Gerald Orndorff of New Oxford. Bowser is jailed in Adams County awaiting a hearing.
George Lazos of Gettysburg travels to New York to meet his brother Gust Lazos returning from Nechorion Nafpaktias southern Greece. Gust and his 12 year old son arrive aboard the Saturnia. Gust was formerly a resident and is an American citizen.
Gettysburg's semi annual dollar day will be observed this Saturday with participating merchants listed in the advertisement. Texaco roofing now available and priced, with new siding options. Citizens Oil Company Roofing Division advertises roofing services in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Ladies' diamond rings promotion included.
Marriage licenses were issued at the courthouse on Tuesday afternoon for Charles Arthur Brame Jr. and Dorothy Marie Staub, with further licenses granted in York for Leroy Samuel Hamer and Velma Janet Kinniston.
