Adams county judge hands out varied jail terms and fines

Judge W C Sheely sentenced three men to penitentiary terms and sent six drunken drivers to county jail as 18 cases were disposed. Edward C H Schiebel received two to four years plus sentences for involuntary manslaughter and drunken driving, with gun possession fines and run duties set to run concurrently. Other cases included serious offenses involving an 11 year old Gettysburg girl, burglary terms, theft and probation dispositions. The crowded courtroom paused as the judge issued multiple rulings and a Landwehr Heating matter was dismissed with costs assigned.

Re-Named Insurance Company Head in Adams County

Harvey A. Scott of Gettysburg R D was re-elected president of the Adams County Mutual Fire Insurance company managers at the January 30 annual meeting in Gettysburg. Donald P. McPherson Jr. was re-elected secretary. Theron W. Spangler of Littlestown was named vice president and J Elmer Musselman was re-named treasurer. The policyholders had met January 13 and elected a 12 member board of managers including Scott Pearson Raffensperger Danner Knouse and others.

Library of Congress Receives McPherson Papers in Full

The remaining papers of Edward McPherson of Gettysburg were handed to Dr. Thomas P. Martin of the Library of Congress Wednesday. Martin will catalogue them in Washington and return family materials to the McPhersons. McPherson, a lawyer, editor, and four term congressman, died in 1895.

Car Hits Pole Near Gettysburg Injures Driver

Charles Shultz aged 55 of Gettysburg suffered a head cut and was treated by a Gettysburg physician after the car he rode in struck and snapped a telephone pole along the Lincoln highway four miles west of Gettysburg. The driver Milton Junior Manus, 20, York Springs R. 2, escaped injury. Police did not file charges.

B. F. Fogse of Gettysburg is on his own recognizance on a check charge. The hearing occurred before Justice of the Peace John H. Basehore and was noted by Donald Myers. Arrest was made by Gettysburg Chief of Police Glenn Gulse.

Eleven couples were issued marriage licenses from the Clerk of the Courts office of Roy D. Renner during last month, down from 21 in the same month a year earlier. December had 10 licenses issued.
