Area residents recall the worst storm since 1936 as 22 to 18 inches of snow fell over the weekend. Roads were impassable except Route 30 while 160 highway workers and 20 bulldozers cleared routes. Bread and milk deliveries delayed but most residents fared well despite powerfully drifting snow.
West Virginia Congressman Arch A. Moore Jr. will speak at the Adams ounis Republican Lincoln Day dinner hosted by the county Young Republicans Club. The event is set for February 15 at Gettysburg College dining hall with tickets available from county Republicans, Young Republicans, or at the door. Moore is a World War II veteran and the ranking minority member on the House Small Business Committee.
Mrs. Robert Meckley in Berlin Avenue heads the Cookie Cupboard for New Oxford East Berlin and Hamp ton. Cookies will be available at her home after the sale begins. Troop chairmen may pick up cookies Saturdays from 630 am to 430 pm, with calls after four o'clock at 6242501 for other times. A New Oxford news column records a surprise party for Mrs. Willis Plank Donna Coble and Mrs. Carl McElsee at Mrs. Elwee s home. Several local residents attend including the Lebs Coble and McElwee families. Other notes include birthday congratulations and travels of local residents, plus club meetings and a new needlepoint shipment at M C Nace Store Carlisle Street Hanover.
Robert K. Wismer son of Mrs Charles Alwine 217 Lincolnway East New Ossora has been named co manager of WHRC AM radio station at Haverford College Wismer a chemistry junior and alumnus of Mercersburg Academy previously served as the station publicity director
The Trinity Lutheran Church East Berlin held a recent reorganization naming Rev Harold R Stoudt as president. Other officers included Richard Smmers as vice president and Leonard Myers as treasurer with Charles Emisenhart financial secretary and Paw Le house treasurer. Visitors included Rev Ray Jones and Rev Richard Senft among others.
Robert Smith, son of Mr and Mrs John P Smith of Water Street New Oxford, left Monday to serve in the armed forces as a volunteer. Donald Groft, son of Mr and Mrs Donald Groft of Pleasant Street New Oxford, left Wednesday to enlist in the U S Navy and will receive boat training in San Diego California.
Adams County court schedules eleven civil cases for the February term. The highlighted matter involves a drag strip near Littlestown pursued by property owners against Fran M. Smith and others to halt extending a drag strip. Another suit seeks damages from a fatal intersection crash near Sherrystown. Additional defendants include Joan H. Swords and Motor Freight Express Inc. Continued on page 8.
Adams County commissioners took no action on admitting county home guests under Medicare pending Medical Aid coverage. They approved a general fund bill of 316.96 and a county aid payment of 292.28 to Fairfield.
Weather delays postpone Monday meeting as Oxford Township forms a planning commission. Members named include Christian Hager Raymond Weaver Walby Snyder Miss Feanor Smith and Ralph Smith. Commission to organize with chairman vice chairman and secretary at next meeting.
Best Speller Blonk daughter of Mrs. Fred G Klunk of North Peters Street New Oxford won the eighth grade spelling contest at her school. She will take part in the statewide finals at Red Lord High School on May 16 in Pa.
York Springs council discussed adding a police force and a 10 o’clock curfew for under 19. The move aims to curb nighttime gang raids blamed on youths from nearby towns. Two officers on part time duty joined the force. council seeks authority to make arrests.
Black Iivainut and Conewago Boy Scout Districts hold a four week adult leader training series February 15 to March 8 at New Oxford High School. Cub and Explorer officials receive sessions while a separate Bar Scout leader course will be added later. Fees are one dollar with sessions 7 30 to 9 30 pm.
East Berlin residents Charlene Acker Kenneth Smith and Fannie Thom as were drawn for jury service at York County court April term and May term. The East Berlin Fire Company plans a meeting 8 pm at its firehall on Locust Street. Cadette Girl Scout Troop 5 discussed a February 19 camping trip. Alfred Biliett spoke on government at a Girl Scout meeting. Bruce Maclay, Gettysburg National Bank president, discussed money usage at Torch Cup gathering. Continued on Page 5.
The Hunterstown Raritan Club met at Great Conewago Presbyterian Church Hall to discuss future activities including a chicken barbecue to be held in early May with date to be chosen later. Fifteen members and guests attended. vice-president Charles Milchimes presided in the president Herbert pe’s absence due to illness. next meeting set for February 5 with location to be announced.
Harry Mout Jr and Don Wilda sized were named co chairmen for the Abbotts town Fire Company annual carnival at its regular meeting. The event runs July 19 23 with committees for utilities food advertising and games. Fire chief banquet planned Feb 12 and more volunteers sought. A large barn fire near Two Churches caused 315 1000 damage with tractors and cattle saved.
Area residents may take the Peace Corps placement test at 9 a.m. on February 12 at the York Main Post Office. The test measures aptitude and language-learning potential, not education. Applicants complete an application, which is the key to selection, and may obtain forms from local post offices or Peace Corps. The test lasts about 90 minutes, with an optional extra hour for a French or Spanish achievement test.
Newly elected officers for the West Manchester Township Farmers and Sportsmans Association include Ed win Chanifman as president replacing Hazel Wire. Other officers are Preston Jacobs first vice-president Paul Krout second vice-president Donald Snyder recording secretary Kenneth Myers financial secretary and John Coble treasurer.
The New Oxford borough council will hold its regular monthly meeting Monday evening in the borough office on N Bolton Street. The session starts at 8 o'clock and is open to the public.
The Thaddeus Stevens Trade School in Lancaster Pennsylvania is now receiving applications for the September term. It offers three year courses in electrical construction electronics machine shop practice printing automotive mechanics brick masonry baking cabinet making and more. Applicants must be Pennsylvania residents orphan or worthy boy age sixteen or older nine grades completed and no upper age limit with no discrimination for race creed or color.
County chair man Wilbur A. Benkers reports Countians bought 1,960,259 in Series F and H Savings Bonds in 145 purchases. The total fell about 250,000 short of the target at 79.91 percent. December purchases totaled 101,312. Pennsylvania residents bought 438,100,000 of the bonds last year reaching 97.28 percent of goal.
