John J. Carchman of Elizabeth New Jersey escaped injury when his car veered to avoid a head on collision and struck a gasoline pump and light standard at J. Robert Fair's store York Springs Route 94 two miles east of town. Property damage estimated at 1500 dollars and 500 dollars to the car.
County Superintendent H. Edgar Reigle announced the Adams County teachers institute will be held in New Oxford and Fairfield next year with both sessions in the county. The New Oxford event is set for September 30 and the Fairfield session for February 24.
The Cashtown Fire Company's annual fair runs Thursday to Saturday with meals each evening— chicken and waffles on Thursday and Saturday plus oysters and other foods. Entertainment dancing games and prizes appear nightly with 245 prizes awarded Saturday.
Delores Fuhrman of Hanover and Leo J. Punk of New Oxford were involved in a Tuesday collision on the Lincoln Highway four miles west of York. Fuhrman’s car, first in line, skidded and stopped in the road and was struck by Punk’s car as he began to pass another vehicle. damage estimated at shown amounts.
Last week Navy enlistments included Ronald C. Rager 17 of Littlestown Route 2 Wilbur J. Noel 18 from New Oxford Route 1 Philip L. Crouse 18 of New Oxford Lincolnway West and Waller E. Baker 17 of 1068 West High Street. Gettysburg Fire Co. was summoned at 9 30 Saturday morning to extinguish a chimney blaze at the home of David Flynn three miles east of Gettysburg along the Lincoln Highway.
Mrs. Sarah Ellen Steinberger, 88, died at home in Gettysburg after a long illness. Survived by four sons and six daughters including Mrs. Charles Kahnhauser of Abbottstown. Susan Elaine Rice was stillborn at Carlisle Barracks Hospital. maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs. Irwin Grace. Emanuel E. Tressler, 74, of Fairfield R1, died after eight years illness. survived by wife and nine children including Mrs. Mary Clark and Mrs. Bessie Slonaker.
The East Berlin Borough Council discussed a sanitary sewer system and treatment plant at its February meeting with estimated costs above 100000. They eyed 40 year self liquidating revenue bonds to fund the project serving about 340 to 350 dwellings. A town wide survey will gauge resident support while street work and curbing plans are paused pending sewer decision.
Mrs. Margaret Middour, 81, resident of Evan-A.B. Home in Quincy, died when an accelerator was pressed by a passerby, starting an idling driverless car. Three friends were injured as the vehicle rammed a greenhouse after Rev. M. J. Shearer, son-in-law of the Diehls of New Oxford area, emerged to help a fifth woman into the car.
A skating party for New Oxford youths was held Monday evening at Forest Park Hanover with over 100 boys and girls in attendance. Chaperons from local churches and schools ensured supervision while transportation was provided by listed volunteers including Mrs Budd Hamm Marshall Sleighter Shultz Robrbaugh Bisecker Sponseller Beck Wallace Slagle Fuss Naili Miller Herman Brendie Spangler and Pressel.
A 1 story chicken house and 300 penny-batched chicks were destroyed by fire at Wayne Warren's farm in York Springs R 2 at 6 this morning. Overheated brood stove believed ignition. Carl S. Menchey of Gettysburg announced his bid for the Republican nomination for county register and recorder at the spring primaries. He currently serves as deputy county treasurer after resigning as manager of the National Garage here after 38 years. An WWI veteran, he is active in Lions Club and Trinity Evangelical Reformed Church, where he recently finished a term as vice president of the consistory. He is a past commander of the Knights Templar and belongs to the Masonic Order, the Moose and American Legion.

A surprise party Sunday at Mrs. Esther Shanebrook's Bonneauville home honored Carey Beamer on his 81st birthday. Beamer, of Arendusville, is reported in good health.
Barbara Cramer daughter of Charles and Ethel Cramer of Chambersburg wed Donald E. Lawver son of Dale and Ruth Lawver of Biglerville in a Sunday afternoon ceremony at Evangelical and Reformed Church Biglerville. Rev Nevin Frantz officiated as the couple exchanged rings amid gladioli and ferns. Lawver a 1951 Biglerville High School graduate joined the Air Force in 1951 and served in Japan until 1954. He works at Avie’s Tire Shop Gettysburg Route 4, owned by his father, a former New Oxford resident.
Richard F. Klunk, 43, of McSherrys town, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence before Justice of the Peace Robert P. Snyder. He posted $500 bail to attend the April term. The offense occurred when his car overturned Sunday at 3:25 a.m. on Littlestown Road near Gettysburg. Klunk suffered a broken arm and torn knee ligament.

George P. Taylor of Biglerville R I Adams County announces he is a candidate for the Republican nomination for re election as associate judge. A farmer and fruit grower and former county commissioner he enters the race in the last year of his first six year term, the first candidate from either party to declare.
In correcting New Oxford assessor records Chief Assessor William G Weaver notes Henry Hersh's property is assessed at 4500 not 3000. The correction aligns Hersh with rising assessments of other owners. Also mentions baked chicken pies available at Connie's Restaurant Lincoln Way East New Oxford this Thursday.

Judge W. C. Sheely, president judge of Adams and Fulton Counties for twenty years, announces candidacy for a third term. He says he was asked by a lawyers' committee to run for re election. He last faced opposition decades ago and was Democratic nominee for the Pennsylvania Superior Court in 1953.
The Clearview school building on Carlisle Street Extension in New Oxford, built in 1894, is given a new lease through remodeling by L. P. Kooken Company architects engineers. They moved operations from Carlisle to New Oxford and will conduct all business from this location. Extensive changes updated foundations to roof, preserving hall floors doors and windows while retaining bell tower and entrance hardware to keep the original schoolhouse character.
A series of charitable gatherings across Hampton New Oxford and Edge Grove includes a 500 card party at Hampton Fire Hall tonight February 4 with prizes and refreshments and a Saturday Sauerkraut Supper behind Paradise Catholic Church to aid church repairs.
