Buried Sink Hole Swallows 75 Truckloads Of Material
In a wheat field on the Clair G. Berkheimer farm at Bitingers a 40 by 1200 foot sink hole has received more than 75 truckloads of dumped material. It stays mostly underwater and the source notes a possible underground river move. State geologists link the cavern to水pressure changes from quarry pumping in renie limestone. Berkheimer recalls a 1941 well drilled nearby, with a water vein and surface close to the ground but not yet affected. An agreement bound quarry owners to refill holes and cover with topsoil at Berkheimer’s expense.

Two Doctors Relocate Gettysburg Optometry Offices

Treiber pleads guilty to larceny and theft charges
Ervin J. Treiber, no fixed address formerly of New Oxford, pleads guilty before Justice George A. Lippy to misappropriating coins from a March of Dimes container and to stealing small tricycles. He is jailed in York County on $600 bail awaiting sentence after a Saturday hearing. Police recovered the money and the bicycles. Treiber sold the toys to Claude Bankert for 31 each.

State to Build Five Mile Section North of X Keys
The State Highway department will construct a five mile section of the Carlisle highway in Adams County this year and has advertised for bids to open at 11 am in the state capital building. The project widens the road to 22 feet and uses grade adjustments to improve safety. Bids close February 17 and route changes will route traffic through East Berlin and Abbottstown.
