Evacuation of Havana Flags Change Planned Jan. 1
At a joint meeting of the United States and Spanish military commissioners the flag change in Havana was set for January 1 at noon. Before 12 o clock American warships will fire a 21 gun salute for the Spanish flag, then Spanish flags will be lowered and the Stars and Stripes raised over El Morro and city buildings. Spanish artillery at Cabanas fortress will salute the American flag with 21 shots. Spanish warships in the harbor will participate.

Six Children Drowned in Canal Ice Tragedy
In Phillipsburg New Jersey on December 28 Grover 12 Lucy 8 and Pearl 6 children of Dewitt Geary a railroad engineer drowned after playing on a frozen Morris canal near Port Colden near Washington. Their mother had twice pulled them from the ice fearing danger and later found a hole. Geary plus neighbors struggled to rescue the children with fatal results. In Watertown New York another incident reported from Alexandria Bay shows Charles Hagerman’s three children drowning after the river ice broke while playing. The mother also perished attempting to help and a passerby saved one child but failed to secure others.

Knoxville Tenn Dec 28 Captain John M Tobin formerly quarter master of the First Brigade division at Camp Poland committed suicide yesterday firing a pistol into his mouth. The ball passed through his spinal column killing him instantly. Tobin, once a Boston man, had come from Washington and had been morbid for some time, likely due to discharge from the volunteer army during its reorganization.
