County Property Valuation In Adams County Rises

The 1939 assessed valuation of Adams County real estate rises to 15 527 342 from 15 455 983 a year earlier, reflecting new construction and plant expansions. Several districts show declines due to fire or storms, with Gettysburg wards 1 and 2 topping 1 million each and Franklin and Conewago townships among the most valuable.

Auditor General Reappoints Rice as Adams County Mercantile Appraiser

Road View Hearing on Adams County Public Road

Viewers appointed in Road Case No 2 of November Sessions 1938 will hold a hearing in Gettysburg Adams County Pennsylvania at ten o'clock A M on December guth 1938 to hear objections to laying out a public road 33 feet wide with center line starting at Township Route No 350 and ending near Township Route No 353 at Township Route No 363. The hearing is open to all interested parties.

Blaze Damages Gasoline Pump At Haines Roadstand

Firefighters used several tanks of chemicals to extinguish a blaze at the base of a gasoline pump at Haines roadstand on Emmitsburg road in Gettysburg. Mrs. Haines opened the pump to fuel a Roy Bollinger truck when flames issued from the pump and several explosions followed. One running board was damaged before the current was cut off and the fire company was alerted. It was the first alarm since December 3 marking an unusually quiet winter season.

Gross Selects 2 Secretaries for York Adams Franklin District

Chester H. Gross, congressman elect, announces two secretaries to start with Congress on January 3. Elmer R. Fink of Emigsville will be York secretary based in York with an office on South George Street. Miss Mary Michael of Hanover will handle Washington duties. A Chambersburg representative will aid constituents. Fink is 30, married with one son, and brings business and corporate secretary experience. Michael has extensive governmental service in Washington and familiarity with the Lafean and Davis offices.

Auto Car Collision in Hanover No Injuries Reported

An automobile driven by J A Reidler of West Pine Street Frackville and a truck driven by Theron Neiderer of 503 Main Street McSherrystown collided at the intersection of North and East Chestnut streets in Hanover Thursday evening at 8 15 o clock. No one was injured.

Two Crashes on the Lincoln Highway West of York

Jacob Bupp of York escaped injury when his car left the Lincoln highway a mile west of New Oxford and plunged into an embankment after a rear wheel left the concrete. The rear of the car was badly damaged. In a second crash two miles west of Thomasville, Clayton Wolf of Thomasville stopped in the roadway to turn left and was rear ended by Galileo Bevilacqua of Philadelphia, pushing Wolf into a tractor trailer driven by Robert Denlinger of Gettysburg. Wolf's family and Bevilacqua's five occupants escaped injury. Bevilacqua faces a charge of traveling too fast for highway conditions.

Highland to Close Gettysburg Mirror Move to Harrisburg

John Highland, owner of the Mirror restaurant in Gettysburg for four years and in the business 26 years, announced Thursday he will relocate his operation to Harrisburg next week and open a new restaurant at 800 North Third Street in the capital city early next January.

Boy, 5, Hit by Car in Hanover

Five year old W. Mex ton Willet son of Mr and Mrs John Willet 639 Frederick street Hanover suffered a compound fracture of the left leg possible skull fracture head and facial injuries after being struck by an eastbound car in front of his home Wednesday at 6 15 p m The child was taken to Hanover General Hospital by ambulance The driver drove him to a physician after removing him from the scene and the car was operated by EB Huff of Littlestown R 2 who told police the child darted into the street and the car struck him with the left front bumper and wheel passing over his leg

Stable fund distribution draws crowd at courthouse

A crowd of over 200 gathered in the court house corridor and arbitration room for the annual Stable fund distribution. At 10 oclock, custodian D C Starsmith with James B Aumen and John Storm handed out half dollars until funds ran out, with recipient names and addresses listed.

Institutions Filled With Yuletide Cheer

The Warner hospital staff brightened Christmas Day for 35 patients with trees, stockings, and gifts tucked into dinners of turkey and sides. County home guests enjoyed six turkeys and treats. Adams county jail released one inmate to avoid confinement, while Gettysburg firemen in Santa costumes distributed candy and oranges at all three sites.

Trostle Wedding Anniversary Observed in Arendtsville

Mr and Mrs Abraham F Trostle marked their sixty fourth wedding anniversary Thursday at their Arendtsville home. Married December 22 1874 at the bride’s parents home near Idaville by Rev F A Hedges. He is 86 she is 85. They spent part of the day with son Earle Trostle and wife and have another son Harry N and daughters Mrs Edward Orner and Mrs Herman Hess.
