New Oxford Council studies water plant building plans

New Oxford Borough Council discussed the protective building for the settling basin and filter tank at the Municipal Water Plant and the construction of the outfall sewer line from the Disposal Plant. Plans include a cement block structure with a metal roof built with local labor, not to exceed 4000 dollars.

East Berlin Lions Light Up Borough Squares with Holiday Displays

Under Sherman Krall, Charles Fahs and John Phillips, the East Berlin Lions Club has placed Christmas lights in the borough square and surrounding streets with plans to expand annually. Charles Spangler announced Christmas tree sales starting December 12 at the Firestone Store on E King St. Wayne Lau reports the fruit cake sale is progressing, run by two teams with a gold team led by Lau. Krall is the high salesman.

UNICEF Trick or Treat Drive Raises $1476 in Adams County

About 1,500 children mainly sixth graders collected 1476.96 for UNICEF during Halloween surpassing last year’s total by nearly 200 and expanding canvass across the county. Local school chairmen and officials from McSherrystown Bonneauville York Springs East Berlin Gettysburg led fundraising efforts under Dr. Jacob Heikkinen and Mrs. Anna D. Stahle.

Oxford Supervisors Adopt November Session Actions

The Oxford Township Board of Supervisors met November 2 at 7 30 p m with Lester Rider presiding. Harmon Dell was awarded township insurance premiums set to be due February 1 annually excluding compensation. Attendees included Raymond Smith William H Smith Ed Kuhn and other elementary principals. Next meeting is December 28 at Store Shop Clearview Shopping Center Hanover with maternity wear orders and unrelated local ads noted.

Medical Care Discussed By Adams Council

The Lower Adams Advisory Council met at the Livingston home to discuss senior medical care options. Leader Lee Frey outlined private plans, expanded social security, federal grants, and a possible voluntary insurance plan, stressing individual and family responsibility with public aid for those in need. The council, part of the Adams County Farmers Association, will meet next at the Lucabaughs in Hanover.

New Oxford FHA Holds Meeting

The New Oxford FHA held a December meeting in the high school home economics room. The president opened the session and the creed was recited by members. A vote approved making Christmas tree favors from ice cream cones with frosting decorations. The group ordered 200 pretzels for the first home basketball game and planned hosting the county council on December 11.

Good Citizen Joy Ruth Neidig Named At Bermudian Springs

Joy Ruth Neidig a senior at Bermudian Springs High School was chosen by the Senior Class and faculty as the school's good citizen for 1962 63. The DAR Good Citizens Committee sponsors the honor and will present a pin and certificate.

Bermudian Springs elects Lerew president of school board

Paul J. Lerew of East Berlin was chosen president at the Bermudian Springs Joint School Board annual reorganizational meeting held at Bermudian Springs High School. Albert Towns-end, Clay Snyder, Huntington Township, were elected to roles including vice president, while coaching duties and the resignation of Dean Becker as head football coach were discussed. Ralph W. Tyson was named to a proposed Adams County legislative council on school affairs.

East Berlin approves final contract for street construction

East Berlin borough council approved the final state contract for rebuilding East and West King Abbottstown Streets. The plan covers 48 foot wide roads with crushed base and bituminous surface plus 1.97 miles of concrete curbing. Total cost near 460000 dollars with borough share about 90000. The state to construct curbing and borough bills owners two thirds after construction and one third after two years.

Times And News Head Dies Wed

Samuel George Spangler 83 of 112 York Street, retired manufacturer and longtime president of The Times and News Publishing Company Gettysburg, died Wednesday at 10 30 am in Warner Hospital. He founded Oyler and Spangler in 1900 making fertilizers and seeds, helped organize the Central Chemical Company, served as director at First National Bank, aided Lincoln Trust, and led The Times and News from 1923. Funeral at Bender Funeral Home Saturday at 2 pm with Rev. Paul L. Reaser. interment Evergreen Cemetery. Public viewing Friday 7 to 9 pm.

East Berlin VFW Post 8896 announces dances at the post home with Novelaires providing music. Dances are set for Saturday nights and December 15 at 10 p.m. Teenage dances sponsored by the post and auxiliary are temporarily discontinued. A plaque lists deceased members since February 1947.
