A miserly man John Breen hoards wealth in a fortified London home near Russell Square. After a sudden peace from a drugged headache he retires to a life of philanthropic gaiety, giving away his fortune to charity. A final flash of lightning reveals the vanished treasure and Breen dies by his own hand.
A Yorktown correspondent reports on sugar from watermelons in Virginia. The method uses large caldrons and slow fire with ripest melons, water kept in the kettle, and either the whole fruit or rind. the juice is boiled into syrup, skimmed, and yields a rich amber product. The process is simple, requires many melons, and is deemed a lucrative venture.
