Red Cross Serbian Relief Efforts in World War I
From the first winter of the war the Red Cross sent a sanitary commission to Serbia to curb typhus. After U S entry a full commission arrived in August 1917 to aid refugees with hospitals food clothing and medical care. They supplied dental care farm machinery and seed to restore productivity and protected children. A photograph shows a little Serbian girl in ragged clothing symbolizing the refugees’ plight before aid arrived.

Southern Pacific seeks sugar freight rate increase
The Southern Pacific applies to raise freight rates on sugar from Betterovia California to points in southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona to fix rate inequities under general order. Affected New Mexico lines west of El Paso would shift from 75 to 82 cents per hundred pounds for 36000 pound car lots and from 69 to 77 cents for 6000 pound car lots. The New Mexico corporation commission has been notified.
