Legal fight over Farm Loan Act tax exemptions targets Kansas City trust

A Kansas City stockholder sues Kansas City Title & Trust Co to stop investing in Federal Farm Loan bonds citing tax exemption as unconstitutional. Frank Hagerman and William Marshall Bullitt lead the suit on behalf of Charles E Smith, arguing bonds are taxable and that the act’s tax-free clause is invalid. The case could affect past and future bond issues and tax burdens for property owners and farmers, with the case likely to seek Attorney General involvement. The matter parallels broader tax policy battles tied to the McFadden Bill aiming to tax future bond issues. Meanwhile New Mexico American Legion posts expand, with Santa Fe largest and Mora second, as about 15,500 local veterans become eligible for membership under the St Louis caucus rules.
