Refunding Santa Fe bonds under State Loan Commission
In 1917 Governor Lindsey halted three Series C bonds issued to refund old Santa Fe County railroad debt. A state audit led by R. C. Reid uncovered duplicate payments totaling $58,168.69 and other overpayments of $13,991.18 to claimants, with several indictments arising. The audit traced bonds, judgments, and coupons from 1891 to 1916, noting missing court papers and the need to separate legitimate from fraudulent claims while stressing taxpayers' interest and school funding implications.
