The senior New Mexico senator Albert B. Fall is described as a leading national figure for his support of Wilson war measures. He secured Republican votes for the administration and urged stronger powers and faster action, while Democratic leaders hesitated. Charles Glover, wounded in a clash with Roosevelt county Sheriff A L Gregg and deputy Mr Kornegay at Elida on November 20, is held by a US commission at Portales to await action of the federal grand jury on draft registration and resisting officers charges. He failed to post $20,000 bail and is jailed in Roswell after transfer from Portales where he lay injured on a cot awaiting physician approval of danger. He claimed to be older than the draft age and pleaded not guilty.
County Treasurer John Eager reports 288 tax receipts issued during the first day of tax season. With rolls received early, the office expects to handle about 8000 receipts and finish within three weeks. Tuesday saw $35,761.15 deposited, likely the largest daily tax haul for the office.
American expeditionary force troops join a French Christmas in Allied territory.
