Gallup voters approve small tax hike for city projects
A small majority of Gallup voters, 519 to 355, backed a one eighth of one percent rise in the gross receipts tax to fund capital improvements. Turnout was low with 874 of 9,486 registered voters casting ballots, 723 in person and 151 by absentee. The tax aims to generate about $650,000 annually for projects including wastewater plant phase 1B, road reconstructions, bridge replacement, library work, and park upgrades. City leaders say the measure funds essential improvement with minimal impact on property taxes.

Coyote Canyon man jailed for sex abuse
Johnny Joe Sr., 47, of Coyote Canyon was sentenced to 99 months in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual abuse of a child. He admitted engaging in a sexual act with a child under 12 between March 28, 1995, and March 28, 1996 on the Navajo Reservation. The FBI and Navajo CID investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Fouratt prosecuted.
