Tribe Begins Tax Hearings Across Navajo Nation
The Navajo Nation plans public hearings over two weeks on an proposed 3 percent retail sales levy and changes to the possessory interest tax. If approved, the sales tax would affect consumers on the reservation, though some versions label it gross receipts. Hearings run in Shiprock Chinle Kayenta Tuba City and Window Rock with sessions scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The initiative follows last year’s 18 cent per gallon gas tax on land vehicle fuel distributors. Shiprock man charged with delivering pot
A 26-year-old Shiprock resident was arrested Friday in Window Rock on marijuana delivery charges after police received a tip he had sold the drug for about a year. Officers found 37.9 ounces at his home. he said it was for his own use and for sale. Aggravated battery case involves a 17-year-old and a 42-year-old in Window Rock. The youth allegedly struck the man, drew a knife, and damaged a truck mirror during the dispute.

Long Walk memorial advances in House committee
The U S House Resources Committee approved a bill authorizing 2 million dollars in federal funding for a Bosque Redondo Memorial and visitor center at Fort Sumner State Monument. The project honors the Navajo and Mescalero Apache who endured the 1863 Bosque Redondo march and the 1868 treaty settlement. Senator Jeff Bingaman secured the funding in the FY 2001 Defense Appropriations Bill.
