Navajo tribal court scales back contempt charge in budget dispute

Navajo Council Adopts 2001 Budget In Special Session
Diné Bureau Window Rock Anxious to reach the Navajo Nation Fair the tribal council suspended rules to adopt the 2001 budget at 645 p.m. Thursday with a 68 to 4 vote. Richard Begaye J C Begay James Bilagody and Edison Wauneka voted against the general fund totals and allocations. Begaye will have his own attorney after asking for forgiveness for conflicts between branches and the council transferred the position to the attorney general’s Justice Department. The general fund totals 109.8 million with the Legislative and Judicial branches receiving 10 million and 5.5 million respectively as part of a larger 843.7 million budget. Unspecified adjustments from the Un designated Reserve reduced the fund from 14.6 million to 6.4 million over the session. See Council rushes page 2.
