A new data processing training center linked to Rock High School is set to begin operations on September 8. The program aims to expand student access to data tech skills and industrial partnerships.
About 150 demonstrators gathered near the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad and 29 were arrested on trespass charges. Eight reporters and photographers were among those detained. bond was set at $500. Authorities noted a police and DOE security presence and that two protesters faced additional identification charges. The plant is a $1 billion repository under construction in salt beds for low level nuclear waste.

Fort Defiance man Waunken Hansen Waunken, 40, died of massive chest injuries when his car collided head on with a pickup about a mile east of the Arizona border on N M 264 Friday night. Five car passengers and the second-vehicle driver were hospitalized. Passengers were James Watchman 37 James Charle Watchman 38 Benny Cleveland 43 Albert Benallie 37 all of Fort Defiance and James Lee 48 of Houck. Second driver Roque David Shije of San Ysidro.
