Navajo Fair in full swing at 54th annual event
Diné Bureau reports the Navajo Nation Fair opens with Happy Kids Day and the Miss Navajo Pageant set for this afternoon. Friday features senior rodeo events, livestock auctions, frybread contests, public speaking for the pageant, gourd dancing, a reunion banquet, and a grand entry with host drums. Fireworks cap the night with a Black Hawk concert at Jackson Arena.

Begaye urges delegates to heed vote on council size
Navajo President Begaye urges tribal council to heed Tuesday's vote on reducing the council size from 88 delegates to 24. About 70 percent of 31,335 voters supported the change, but the law requires a majority of all registered voters, meaning 46,137 yes votes were needed. See Begaye to delegates, page 2.

Three hurt in two car crash near Vanderwagen
Three people were injured in a head on two vehicle crash shortly after midnight Tuesday near Vanderwagen. A 17 year old unlicensed driver was taken to Gallup Indian Medical Center. The other driver, Sam Scott 31, and his passenger Pearl Smith 29, were treated at the same hospital. Scott faced drunken driving charges and was still hospitalized Wednesday. Smith was flown to Albuquerque for further care. Police also detained nine migrants from Oaxaca and Veracruz camps earlier, aided by a Navajo NM school teacher.

Drunken driver admits to involuntary manslaughter
Wayne Begay 47 of Pinehill pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for a drunken driving crash on December 13 1999 that killed passenger Lolita Alonzo. Begay admitted he drank several beverages then slept at the wheel near Newcomb on U S Highway 666 colliding with a southbound semi tractor trailer. Alonzo died from massive plant trauma. Begay faces up to six years in prison and a $250000 fine. Investigated by Navajo Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U S Attorney Grey Fouratt.
