Man Killed by Train Near Churchrock
Merle Billie, 42, of Fort Wingate, was struck and killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train near Churchrock early Saturday. Locomotive conductor Mark Moss said the train, heading west at about 68 mph, was 50 to 75 feet away when he saw a man in a red shirt beside the track and could not stop in time. The McKinley County Sheriff's Department identified the victim.
