Gallup Police continue the probe into how a loaded handgun ended up under an office desk at Gallup High School on Oct 14. Assistant Principal Ben Chavez found the weapon while checking for a computer card and Principal Mike Butkovich notified police. A live round remained in the chamber. the magazine was missing. Chavez did not know how long the gun had been there. Custodians might have found it during after hours. A student who had visited the office earlier for an expulsion is suspected due to his proximity to the desk. A search of restrooms, locker rooms, trash cans, and other student areas turned up no magazine. Staff were notified at day’s end.
