Navajo gaming referendum faces court challenge
Window Rock: Navajo voters Lynda Lovejoy Edison Wauneka and Richard Kontz filed suit in Navajo District Court to halt next week's gaming referendum. They allege officials Notah Begay-Platero and Manychildren acted outside authority in campaigning and education efforts funded from tribal money. The case seeks a restraining order over education claims and ballot imagery that favors pro gaming. The referendum, authorized in April, follows a 1994 vote in which about 51,000 voters participated and failed by under 10 percent.
