Deputy Chief John Allen says the Gallup Police will not mediate sibling quarrels over video games and stresses police help for emergencies only. He cites cases where calls for domestic disputes consumed resources and warns against overreliance on police for noncriminal matters.
Sylvia Andrew, executive director of UNM Gallup, was appointed to the New Mexico Indian Education Advisory Council. She will help oversee administrative operations, policy decisions affecting faculty, students, and curriculum, and address campus issues. The panel includes Native and non native representatives. Andrew was honored at a Fort Wingate High School meeting for her contributions to Native American students.
President Joe Shirley and the Navijo Nation Board of Election Supervisors return to court for an evidentiary hearing on the referendum measure tied to the judicial restructuring. Judge Allen Sloan’s prior ruling and the Supreme Court’s dismissal set the stage for a five hour hearing on October 8 as Shirley seeks a temporary restraining order to keep the referendum on the general election ballots. Shirley is named along with Navajo Nation authorities in Window Rock District Court proceedings.
The Gallup City Council approved an increase of 7000 to 9000 for the Wild Things Championship Bull Riding and Wild Thing Bull Ride, raising the total lodgers tax allocations to 148000 for five events including the Squash Blossom Classic Lions Club Rodeo Four Corners Football Championship and the Gallup Film Office. The five member committee had concluded its meetings about two months ago and Anna Dulla a hotel general manager and committee member spoke to the council.
