Hopi Code Talker Rex Pooyoumd Honored by Flag Half-Staff
Hopi Tribal Chairman LeRoy N. Shingoitewa orders flags on the Hopi Reservation flown at half staff through Wednesday to honor Rex Pooyoumd of Hotevilla who died October 23 at age 93.5. Pooyouma was the last of ten Hopi Code Talkers credited with secret WWII communications that aided Allied victory in the Pacific. Eugene Talas, director of Hopi Veterans Services, conveyed condolences from the Office of the Chairman and Hopi Tribal Council. Pooyouma, born June 20, 1917, was laid to rest the same day in his home village of Hotevilla.
