The McKinley County general election absentee deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday at the county courthouse Bureau of Elections. Voters must have registered for absentee voting. the deadline to register has passed. Absentee ballots by mail must be received by the Bureau of Elections by Tuesday Nov 2 to count.
Navajo Tribal Council meets to decide whether to change polling sites in 29 communities on the Navajo Reservation for the November tribal election. State and county officials favor separate sites. tribal lawyers warn the move could confuse voters and spark lawsuits. See VOTING, page 8.
Eastern Bureau Crownpoint New threat to the Bisti Badlands north of here emerged Monday with acknowledgement that Interior Secretary James Watt is considering elimination of the site as a proposed wilderness area. State BLM spokesman John Gumert said Watt was contemplating dropping plans amid a broader review of six areas in the state. Supporters note the Bisti’s unusual public backing and its coal and archeological value, while a court fight with Sunbelt Mining Co. continues.
William Johnson, 36, was sentenced to nine years after pleading guilty to kidnapping and armed robbery tied to the March Navajo New Mexico store raid. Judge Louis De Pauli cited mitigating factors for Johnson while noting his cooperation in prosecutions of others in the case. Johnson helped arrest another suspect and was a key witness against Roy Scrivner, who received 20 years after being found guilty of armed robbery and related counts.

Throckmorton appeared before U.S. Magistrate Rain Grenko and faces a federal felony. He will be arraigned in Albuquerque.
