Anti relocation forces gather at Cactus Valley conference

Several hundred Navajos attend a two day conference at Cactus Valley Arizona where Hopi traditionalists led by Thomas Benyacaya oppose forced relocation from the Joint Use area. Benyacaya charges land disputes are government driven to access coal and uranium resources. Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald praises the event as a beginning of a people to people campaign.

Bluewater Residents Eye Local Fire Station

A 15 member Bluewater group led by Burr Marley pushes to build a local fire department near Thoreau. They have secured a truck, a tanker, land, and partial equipment, with a foundation poured and a plan to finish next summer if community funding grows. Marley highlights independence from government control and the growing need as the area expands toward McKinley County and the new power plant.

Four injured in pickup car crash on Third Street

A late Sunday crash on Maloney Avenue and Third Street sent Cathy Olguin, 19, and Freddie Lucero, 3, to McKinley General Hospital in stable condition. Olson Tsosie, 20, and Lolita Begay, 21, treated and released at the Public Health Service after the pickup struck Olguin’s car. Tsosie cited for careless driving. In a second Sunday incident, Harrison Gorman, 23, of Churchrock fell asleep at the wheel on U.S. 66, swerved into the eastbound lane, and hit Michael Chavez, 19, of Gallup, then rolled his truck but no injuries were reported.

Three men arrested after Gallup Dairy Queen robbery

Three men were arrested five miles east of Gallup after an armed robbery at Dairy Queen East Sunday night. The trio, Alverado Perez Gonzales, 28, Victor Lorenz, 22, and Jack Dennis Goss, 35, were linked to a stolen Texas van and held at city jail. Police also sought two suspects in a Circle K holdup and noted a separate Allsup's robbery the night before.

New Mexico MX survey canceled by Air Force

Representative Joe Skeen says a survey in eastern New Mexico tied to the MX missile system has ended. An Air Force spokesman indicated the firm may have loose ends but no new work will be undertaken. Reagan rejected Carter’s mobile basing plan in 1981.
