Navajo general election to proceed despite MacDonald disqualification
The Navajo Board of Election Supervisors declared the November 6 1990 general election on for Navajo Nation. They disqualified suspended Chairman Peter MacDonald as a presidential candidate in a 7-0 vote following his bribery conviction. The board refused to postpone the election, approved Leonard Haskie as a presidential candidate, and began steps to place Haskie on the ballot with a running mate. Absentee ballots and campaigning rights became central issues as meetings continued.
