The Navajo Nation Council approved a raise for Head Start workers as part of an unfinished agenda carried to a later special session. Delegates planned to reconvene in November to receive agency reports and hear the president and speaker, whose addresses were postponed.
Three local police agencies joined forces for a two day DWI roadblock on eastbound Interstate 40 at the Port of Entry. Officials said the effort aimed to ensure all drivers are licensed and commercial vehicle operators follow the law while confiscating drugs and detaining several individuals from Mexico.
Voters in Grants and McKinley counties will decide on Bond Issue B at the November 3 election. The property tax bond would raise over 4.5 million for capital construction across primary schools and higher education, with broad support and part of a 72 million statewide program. The Zuni School District would gain 1.4 million for a new high school, and UNM Gallup is set to receive 1.2 million for a Calvin Hall science wing addition.

George Teshima, a 78 year old Gallup native and former builder, now pursues pottery. His works are on display at the University of New Mexico Gallup Student Center through November 1. He uses a potter’s wheel to shape clay and often carves and paints after firing, guided by the clay itself.
Hopi farmers in Polacca and surrounding villages describe a generally good corn year with strong moisture, widespread harvest by mid October, and notable crops at several fields. Ravens, bugs, lizards, and predators like coyotes affect yields. some use noise cannons and rotating fake owls to deter pests.
