The 1990 Navajo Nation general election may be moved to January 1991 after the Navajo Nation Council approved delaying the election by 60 days. Interim President Leonard Haskie could replace suspended Chairman Peter MacDonald on the presidential ballot amid a wider battle over ballot changes and MacDonald’s conviction on 41 of 42 counts.
An arrest warrant was issued for Truett W. Brown after he missed arraignment dates in a money laundering and conspiracy case tied to the sale of the Big Boquillas ranch in northern Arizona to the Navajo tribe. Byron Bud Brown remains free on $100000 bail. both brothers face a 16 count indictment alleging concealment of $500000 in illegal profits related to kickbacks to ex Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald.
President Bush backed off threats to close the government and signed a short term spending bill keeping funding in place until Wednesday. House and Senate conferees began negotiating a deficit package differing in approach while aiming to cut the deficit by 500 billion dollars over five years.
Utah officials consult on how many of 500 Navajo names in San Juan County should be restored to voter rolls. Clerk had purged duplicates and had restored about 20. discussions aim to set recommendations by early next week. Federal observers may shift depending on state presence. Native America Votes plans nine polls with bilingual helpers and lawyers. A court order requires a full time bilingual voting rights coordinator.

Interim Navajo President Leonard Haskie declared he is back in the political race at a press conference in Window Rock. The Navajo Nation Council amended Title 11 allowing the third place primary finisher to appear on the general election ballot if a top candidate is removed, and authorized a 60 day postponement if needed. Haskie pledged to participate in the January 6 1991 general election and to win.
